I havn't used it...but it does "sound" pretty secure. Why would you need this?

I'm not so sure about the self-destruct thing it's got going...

seems to be a secure thingy, but i think selfdestruct is a little bit over the top, what if i accedently drop it?

maybe if you are a really important government official carrying around really important data, it would be nice

id use it if i would carry around military/corperate/whatever secrets, but just for my own stuff, id use something else(thats less expensive and i don't have to worry about it selfdesctucting when something happens)

seriously... is the selfdestruction really needed?

I was mainly just intrigued by the ... err ... intrigue of it. I do have a small handful of documents for work that we're obligated to keep very well secured but I've been using TrueCrypt and that works very nicely. However, since the Ironkey seems like it might make things a little easier in some ways and a little more cumbersome in others, I'll pass on it because of the price.

...well it looks cool anyway.
I know almost nothing about secure drives but if I was in the market I would look at this one. Price is right and technology 'sounds' good, in theory at least.

I guess the primary point is, things are only as secure as the intelligence/determination of those wanting to gain access to it. being hardware encrypted seems like a nice hurdle.

thats what the internet is for, why would you buy a whole secured thing if you could do the same by sending the pr0n to your own email(of which only you know the password)

still a top 10 use though

if i had documents that i needed secure i wouldn't really want them to self-destruct on a whim....lol

you know every guy who gets one secretly wants to self destruct it to see if it does anything cool...

"Self destruct" does not exist in computer data. You can always find what has been on a hard drive, it just depends on how much money you're willing to put into it.
A hard disk drive is the main issue in the current scandal in France involving our ex-Prime Minister, it was deleted with army-grade tools, and still the police managed to read it after a while.
The only way to 100% secure data is to manage for the investigator never to get hold of the hardware.
In France, military computers that are retired are grinded into dust and mixed with concrete blocks.

from what i gathered slug they were talking about hardware self destruct....much more effective then simple erasing/wiping of data....

not to mention all you have to do is overwrite the space with random characters for deleted records and you can't ever get back what was once there.

Also, a nice effective electronic magnet will do wonders for a wipe, or is that a myth?

Whatever you do with your hard drive, it can be read back. The means necessary will vary with the deletion process used. Deleting your files is enough for your 12 year old son, and it escalates from there to "disintegrating the hard drive is what it gets for the CIA to be unable to read it".
Because magnetic fields always leave a faint trace even if you try to hide it, with a magnet or otherwise. That's valid for all magnetic storage, bu the way.

I'd say the most simple way to erase data effectively is to start by deleting the data. Then run it through some heavy duty magnets. Then open the case and hammer down the components. Burn the ruined componenst and as a last thing, throw it out to the sea.
