and now I can't get XP to load my profile. I get an error message after I put in my password "invalid access to memory location" and it starts up a temporary profile. Any ideas on what I should do?

I now just took out the new DIMMS and put in the old ones and booted up and everything seems normal. This is why I don't do computer upgrades, cause unexplained stuff makes me angry

My first question would be, did you put the ram in with your old stuff, or replace the old stuff? Sometimes Ram for whatever reason... different speeds, different timing doesn't like to be mixed and matched with other ram that aren't identical.

if you've tried it with just the new stuff, then i'd say you recieved a bad stick. do they work individually if you got a pair (assuming its not a memory 'kit' that needs both sticks to work), or if its a single stick does it work alone?

I got two sticks of 1GB each (PC-3200) and replaced them with the two sticks of 512MB I had before. I put them in the same slot as the old ones as per my mobo's recommendations. I haven't tried using just one, but it is a kit, they both came together in the same package.

I hope I didn't get crap memory. It's not top of the line but still should at least work right? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231047

EDIT: Oh and the memory "works". It registers all 2GBs when I use the temporary profile so its not like its a completely dead stick...

If it came in a 'kit' then is the 'duel channel memory'? If so, can your mobo handle duel channel memory sticks? Some older ones cannot.

I got an email back from tech support and they said that I had my Memory Voltage too low in the BIOS. Told me to bump it up to ~2.75, haven't tried it yet though...

EDIT: Yeah Jason, the old sticks were dual channel also.

EDIT EDIT: Upping the voltage worked. It's a healthy new baby 2Gb of Memory

Glad to hear you got the problem resolved. question about the ram though. do you have an older P4 motherboard? i haven't seen 400mhtz RAM used as an upgrade to existing components in a long time.

If your motherboard supports it, i'd still recommend you return the ram you got and get some with a higher clock speed. i'm certain you can get 800mhtz or better it for the same price or less.

Just my opinion.

my old sticks were:

KHX:DDR - Kingston HyperX
DDR 400MHz (PC3200)
KHX3200AK2/1G 1GB 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2
(Kit of 2 - 512MB)

I honestly didn't pay attention to the mhtz, which was probably a bad call on my part, but how much will it up my performance?

noticeably if you're using this machine to play games, as i assume you are since you upped the ram. Faster ram means less bottleneck when reading and writing to your memory... Not usually a major issue, (most bottlenecks come from your GPU and hard drive access speed) but still has an impact on performance.

Bottom line, If your board can support it, and you can return the ram you got, theres no reason not to upgrade the speed.
