I'm assuming it's all rumor, and done out of fear by politicians to make a point, or to disturb the peace, but since some part of me wasn't sure, I'd thought I'd just go ahead and post it here, to see what some people had to say.

and yeah I know politics here is kinda the wrong thing to discuss...but some part of me was a bit worried.

I dont think they will start the draft again, just from the fact that they are not letting the people that are in get out when their contracts are up. There are 10 people in my unit that should have been out of the Army in January, but the government extended the contracts. Once they got you, they can keep you up to two years after your contract was supposed to be up, and that just for the enlisted. Officers can be brought back 5, 10, or more years later.

They say there is no Stop Loss....tell that to the people in my unit that have had to spend and extra year away from their families AFTER their contract was supposed to be up.

/gets off soap box

Thank You

being a former Marine the idea of keeping men after their term is up is just unforgivable. I understand we are at war, but these men fulfilled a voluntary duty to their country and the way they are re-paid is by being trapped into not being able to rely on their country to then release them after their duty has been served.

The very thought of "No Stop Loss" makes my blood boil.

As to the draft. If we start another conflict such as Iran or even god-forbid China then yes we will need a draft to fight those battles if we are still bogged down in Iraq.

There will never be a draft again. A volunteer army is far more effective than any conscripted one. And the only draft legislation that has been put into play was done by two Democrats in order to raise fears about the war and help Kerry get votes. The House actually voted on it last week, and it failed, with only two yes votes. One of the sponsors of the bill even voted against it.

There will never be a draft unless foreign troops invade the U.S. The public would not go for it, unless the situation was so unbelievably dire. And at that point, I believe we'd probably be using nuclear weapons.

Would you two (moge and Cetera) mind taking a few seconds to attend to some important matters in the BoD forums please?

Not to be worried about.

If you have paid attention to the news at all you would see that this idea of the draft has been shot down so many times it is not even funny.

Well never say never. I seriously doubt though that it will happen any time soon unless something drastic happens.

The US already learned its lesson from Vietnam about having drafts for controversial wars.

... and then it will be too late.

Charles Rangel started all this up last year to make people think about the cost of what we are doing. It is being used now by the same people who like to scare old people into thinking their SS benefits will disappear.
