What is the difference between EQ and EQ2, aside from graphics?

Haven't spent a lot of time looking at it, but it looks much BIGGER as far as the world goes. Dunno what else though.

I haven't read much on it (not an EQ fan) BUT the game seems greatly improved. The one cool thing that perked my interest was that most of the NPC's will now have voice overs.

Same "world" in a rough sense, but about 700 years later I think, the moon exploded, the world is wrecked, only two cities are really left, Qeynos and Freeport..

The Gods have withdrawn and are letting the mortals sort it out themselves (not really, but they are pretending too..)

Still class based, but more variety and not as limited to races...

The website has a pretty good rundown on the lore...

I will be a Gnomish Monk at release, your shins will all be mine !!!!

I am looking at EQ2 and WoW as my next MMO. Not sure which way I will go. Who knows, I may end up playing Matrix Online :P

Found some good general information

FAQ

Extended FAQ

Couple things I have learned so far... any race can be any class.

There are only 2 main cities, Qeynos (good) and Freeport (bad) but they are epic in size.

16 races to choose from (15 initially... Froglok is unlocked per server by a quest).

Class System is different
Quote:
How does the EQII class system work?
We use a branching archetype system. A player begins our game at level 1 as a commoner. At level 3 the player will choose one of four adventure archetypes: the fighter, the priest, the mage, or the scout. Each of the adventuring archetypes branches into three classes, one of which the player will choose at level 10. Each class then further branches into two subclasses, which is chosen at level 20.

No Kill Stealing
Quote:
How do locked encounters work?
When a player or group performs an aggressive action against an opponent, the encounter is instantly locked. This means that no other players or groups may interfere with the encounter and any movement-enhancing buffs will be temporarily suspended. The locking mechanism is automatic as soon as a deliberate offensive action is taken by someone in the group.
If the player or group decides the encounter is not winnable, the encounter may be unlocked with a press of the “yell” key. At this point other players will be able to attack the opponent. Once unlocked, however, the loot and experience provided by the mob are negated.

I gotta say... these graphics are quite impressive. Completely opposite style of WoW, but I like them both.

In terms of high level differences between WoW and EQ2, no PvP in EQ2.

Back on topic...if you played EQ, there is an heirloom system that allows you to pass down certain items to your 'descendants" in EQ2. Other than that, there's no character transfer or anything like that.

and the lack of PVP in EQ2 is one of the BIGGEST HUGEST MOST OUTSTANDING things EVER IN THE HISTORY OF EVER to get me to preorder the game.

Yeah, I think I agree with you on that Manti. I haven't done much PvP in SWG, except to get incapped 3 times in a row when I forgot I was TEF on a PvE mission. Don't get me wrong...i had a BLAST in Planetside for a couple months, but I think it's very difficult to develop a PvP system that isn't corrupted by l@@t gamers or whatever, especially when the PvP aspect is only one element of the game.

i also like how the class system in EQ2 will let you grow into what you want to be as you level. It's not like you make an irrevocable decision upfront with no turning back except to create a new char...

then again, it's exciting to have some element of random (non AI generated) danger like I think may occur in WoW where you don't have PvP unless you are in wild or border regions between the two warring sides fight.

The biggest thing that turns me off from EQ2 is that it is SOOOO geared to those who still play EQ. From beta to the hand me down items, it feels like the hardcore EQ players are going to rule EQ2 as well. I'm looking for an MMO, like WoW, where there's a flat ground that everyone starts at.

Getting a few items handed down might not seem like a lot, but if you ever twinked a char in an MMO like EQ, you know the difference it can make. My first char took 6 months to get to the highest lvl (50 at the time), but once I had an alt twinked it took 2 months to get to the same point (with negligible difference in play time).

What kind of hand-me-down items are we talkin about here? Uber weapons and gear, or mediocre items that look cool or resemble some sort of status?

I would agree with you Exar that that hand-me-down thing would suck if it gives too much of a benefit to the hard-core EQers... I have a few friends who got hardcore addicted to EQ and play it all the time, and I don't want them to be power leveling and get way ahead of me right from the start.

Who cares what other players have and can do?

Just play a game for personal enjoyment, not the race to who gets where first.

Thats my theory.

I completely agree with this point of view. Years ago, B.W. and B.C. (that's "before wife" and "before child";)) when I had much, much more gaming time available to me I possibly could have gotten into the competition end of things. Not so much anymore but I do still like making achievements in-game, despite there have been many people to do the same thing before me.

I think EQ2 has taken more strides on the immersion front over EQ1. I also have a hunch that I would feel more immersed in my environment in EQ2 versus SWG.

Aspects that impact my view on this are the talking NPC's which I think will be great, no need to worry about continuity or breaking with established mores, beliefs there's a word that is used to describe this better but it escapes me at the moment), and the lack of PvP. It not that I dislike PvP, I just think it's hard to implement well and allow for some semblance of an equal footing between power gamers versus casual gamers.

The one thing that continues to intrigue me about WoW is whether or not they will implement PvP well...Even if they do, will I care?

My personal scorecard currently reads:

Graphics EQ2
PvP WoW
Immersion EQ2
Missions ?
Short Play PlayabilityWoW?
Guild Play ?

On the graphics front, it's not that the EQ2 graphics are necessarily better, but they appeal to me more. On the short play sessions front, seems like they have their act together. I have no information on EQ2. I've identified Guild Play as features or functions that make it / allow it to be even more fun hanging with you all...I know there are other considerations, but this my start at a list...and one that I'll be applying to SWG vis-a-vis these games once JTL is out...and again I'm a bit off topic...sigh

I pre-ordered today since I'm not sure I would be playing pre-release. I will be applying to the WoW open beta when it happens. Between these two and the JTL release instead of the half hour a day I am averaging in MMO's if that...I should be able to figure out which game I will "focus" on by 2008.

i dont play EQ2, but i was reading a magazine out here that said you have like a 20% chance of finding romance with another player in SWG and like over 80% chance of finding romance in EQ2 lol

just thought this was a funny bit of info

:D What the hell does that mean? Are they serious? Will I be forced to romance? The biggest negative trend in MMORPG's is all the forced romance time.

I was thinking it was romance time that kept us out of MMOs.

yup they were serious. it was a true article in a gamer magazine someone has out here. According to the article, player weddings are really rampant and raging in EQ2. So seems EQ2 is a big love fest online lol

I guess if you are going to check out EQ2, you better rent a tux!

Would you be creeped out if you married a female in-game and it turned out to be a guy? I would and so I am very careful with that sort of thing.

Tobi is a homophobe! :P don't blame ya.

I think if I had to guess, I'd say that little bit of oh so important factual information was based simply on the fact that quite a few more females will be playing EQ2 rather than SWG. Just my guess.

Doesn't sound like the heirloom functionality is that big of a deal...

plus I thought this was pretty cool. You get a guild website as part of the game.
