Up until about a year and a half ago there was next to no broadband internet access is Ireland (which is a bit of a joke considering the amount of technology companies here), thanks mainly to anti-competitive monopolising former semi-state teleco companies.
But things are slowly moving along, and prices are slowly dropping, with the main options being DSL, Wireless ISPs and very very very little cable.

I'm currently on a 512/128kbs DSL connection, although I'm looking at getting a 1mbit/1mbit wireless connection.

But I wonder what sort of connection everybody else has, just to see how far behind we really are here?

Cable-Modem

The speed is variable as it is a shared Bandwidth. I'm sure you are right there with us for download speed.

I've had basic ADSL for about 4 years. I believe it's 1Mbps/125Kbps.

Hehe I am a bit spoiled at home with the following

PUD installed 100mbit fiber connection to the house, with up to 5 different ports available for use.

In other words I have 5 individual 100mbit ports availble for my use atm :). Once I get the place rewired I plan on using most of them :)

Hmm, I have bellsouth, 1.5Mbit DL 256K UL I think. Costs about $40/month.

Here's a page summary of what bellsouth offers in ATL:

http://www.fastaccess.com/content/consu ... sp#dsllite

I have the intermediate thingie, the 1.5 Mbit DL, because me and 2 of my roomies share the connection and I don't want to see my ping skyrocket because someone is downloading porn. Besides, the costs are split 3 ways... :)

In my experience, this speed is as much as I need. I don't think I have ever encountered a download where my own connection was the bottleneck in the process.

kinda jealous, looks like Roadrunner is bad in my area compared to others with RR...and these results do seem pretty accurate when I think about my DL/UL rates from watching downloads and such.

I did another test from a more local server...and got..
Download : 2978.5 k bits per sec
Upload : 365 k bytes per sec

The top test was from Orlando to California, the second test from Orlando to Tampa.

I've had Cable and DSL for about 4 years now. Why? I don't know .. I used to work from home and was required to have two connections to the net which work paid for. I just got used to it when the cable line got saturated with neighborhood people.

So ..

Your download speed : 2457237 bps, or 2399 kbps.

Your upload speed : 324044 bps, or 316 kbps.

Cable Line Adelphia:

Your download speed : 2210069 bps, or 2158 kbps.

Your upload speed : 114531 bps, or 111 kbps.

Golga,

On the left-hand side of the screen there are a number of menu options. Look for and select "Tools/Tests."
