RSS FAQ:
What is an RSS feed?
An RSS feed is a way for you to get news and information from a site without actually visiting a site. The information is retreaved from an RSS Application on your computer and is automatically updated with the most current information from that site.

Huh?
Example: This RSS feed will gather all new posts on all public forums and download them to your RSS Reader. That was you no longer have to poke around the boards to see what new posts where made or what reply to old posts where made.

How do I use this?
Well first you need an RSS Reader. There are many out there and some email applications (like Thunderbird) and some browsers (like Opera) have built in RSS Readers.

ThunderBird
This is the Email Ap from Mozilla. It has a very nice RSS Reader built it. The best feature of this is that it allows you to choose how often (down to every minute) do check for new posts. You get a notice about a new post and it downloads the full message or just the headline - you choose.

Firefox RSS Extension
Personal Note: I prefer the Thunderbird reader way more that this one. Main problem with this one is it only checks every 10 minutes. Not a big deal really but I hate being limited :)
I use Firefox Browser so here is a little how to on installing an RSS Reader for Firefox.
Open Firefox
go here:
https://addons.update.mozilla.org/exten ... =10&id=320
Click Install and restart the Browser
go to Tool->Habari Xenu
Set Update to 10 minutes (or whatever you want)
go here:
http://www.swg-avian.net/forums/rss.php
Save as bookmark in the Habari Xenu folder (which was automatically placed in yout bookmarks)
click on Tool->Habari Xenu
click on Avian (may need to rename bookmark)
This will download the 35 most recent posts made on Avian and so long as the window is open it will update every 10 minutes.
To manually update click on Update Feeds in the upper left ojust under the toolbar in Firefox.

What Other RSS Readers are out there and how do I use them
/shrugs Idunno

MODing you RSS feed
By editing the URL on the RSS feed you can customize the information that is downloaded to your reader.

Just get new posts, do not download Replys
Use this URL
http://www.swg-avian.net/forums/rss.php?t=1

Just get a few thread
By default the RSS feed will send 35 threads to you. But you can limit this by using:
http://www.swg-avian.net/forums/rss.php?c=(1-35)

Just get Posts from a specific Forum
http://www.swg-avian.net/forums/rss.php?f=(enter forum number)
to get the forum number to to the forum you wish to get posts from.
Look in the URL Bar. You will see "f=NUMBER" that number is the number of the forum"

Can I get feed from only a select few forums?
Currently no. But This is something the maker of the MOD plans on adding.

how do I get feeds from Private Forums
We are working on reworking the code to allow you to get a feed from every board you have permissions to.

OK that is about it for now. RSS Feeds are a great way to stay up on Avian especially if you don't have the time (or just lazy like me) to browse through the forums.

Would like to thank Yak for pointing this MOD out to us and Obo for giving me access to the sites code /shifty eyes /evil grin

Have fun!

Just a note: Thunderbird - the email ap from Mozilla - has a really nice RSS Reader built in. So far it is better than most Ive tried so far.

Moge gains 1 point in my coolness book.

This works with the News reader plugin in the registered version of Trillian, though contains a bunch of extra HTML tags that reduce legibility a bit. We might be able to make a trillian-specific version if anyone else is interested...

We've all been working on this, and how have a version that returns a slightly different result if you use trillian. Does anyone else want a different RSS feed returned? We've made it so it can return a different result based on what type of browser you are using.

If you want to test out the new version (which just looks nicer with trillian), point your RSS client to:

http://www.swg-avian.net/forums/rss_bro ... ecific.php

It also returns a slightly smaller amount of text and switches some stuff around to make it more readable. Anyone using this other than Cyrus?

I use Trillian and just DLd the plugin for news. I've configured it (hopefully correctly) and will post here when/if I see activity.

Cool.

Make sure you use:

Server: www.swg-avian.net
Location: forums/rss_browser_specific.php

Any other slashes in there screw it up. :)
