This doesn't really interest me. What I've read so far has me taking the blue pill.

heh... ditto. I didn't even watch the last movie yet, I was so disappointed with the 2nd one. I too have heard some stuff about this game that turns me off.

If they wanted to make this work...they should've started development while the first movie was in pre-production.

Coming out now...who cares?

ive been in beta for this since october. its quite an amazing game. it will seperate fantasy and sci-fi MMO's. it has by far the best community i have ever seen in any game, and the game mechanics are new and wonderful.

Beta Communities are almost always great. Something about the dedication of Beta Testers makes it that way, and probably the leniency given to the developers at that time, plus the interaction with the developers. Post release this usually disappears.

Yeah, convince us. SWG was "new and different, and wonderful" and all that crap back in beta. :P Pardon us for being a bit jaded. :)

I started to DL it but a 12 hour DL time I just couldn't hack.

I am always interested in new MMO's if for no other reason to see what they did to makes thiers different from the pack.

i understand where you guys are coming from. i'm a devout matrix fanatic so almost anything related to that type of story, or extensions of that story intrigue me. right now the main thing in the game is combat. it is so different from any mmo. i'll try to explain a bit.

the first huge difference you see is the combat style. there is ranged combat which is like every other combat system, then there is the interlock system.

with interlock, you enter into close combat with someone and you have many many special moves, and 4 basic reactions. speed attack, power attack, throw, and block. the way it is set up is almost twitchy. you have to react to whatever the opponent does. it resembles KoToR but for an MMO. i dont really know how else to explain it. you'd have to play it or at least see some movies of it. there is bullet time. and it is awesome.

the abilities are great. there are 3 different types of fighting styles right now. kung-fu, aikido, and karate. you can go down any tree at any time. there are also about 6 different gun trees. pistols, subs, rifles/shotguns, and duals for each. you can be basically an operative(warrior), a hacker(mage), or a coder(crafter). now, the really cool thing is that you can be all of them whenever you want. since it is the matrix you learn an ability and can store it for later use. you cannot be all of them at the same time though. you only get a certain amount of ability slots.

you gain 'information'. basically it is money, to buy all the different abilities. there are sooooo many trees to go down. kind of like SWG's skill tree, but the final abilities actually mean something, plus, they are swapable for any given situation.

the way experience works is just like WoW. You level up, opening better, more powerful abilities. you buy abilities with information. one good thing is that just because you get better abilities, doesnt mean you dont use the starting/low level abilities. they are all integral to winning a fight.

the way the mission system works is great too. you have a cell phone. you start with only being able to contact the Zion operative. as you do more missions for Zion, you become more and more 'noticeable' to the two other factions(merovingian and machinist). They will contact you and ask you to fight for them. If you dont, they will hunt you.

you can pick any of the three factions to work for. or you can work for all of them. you wont get very important missions from any of them though. the other option is to work for rogue programs. not really exiles, not really machines. just programs that have their own agenda.

i'll explain more later about the mission system and the way stories and crews/factions work.

excellent post. Thanks for sharing the info with us. I would love to hear more about crafting and how a crafter fits into the world.

What kind of things do you fight? Other players? Other faction NPCs? How is PvP or PvE set up in relation to the factions?

ok here is some more.

The mission system is pretty unique as well. as i said, you call up and talk to the operative for any faction and get their missions. Every mission i have done for every faction i have helped has had some kind of new twist. There is unique dialogue for each mission so it fits in with whatever your last few missions were.

When you 'open your phone', there is a list of contacts. Select the one you want. They will talk to you a bit about your last few missions and give you a bit of a pep talk before your next. Right now, there are critical missions, and regular everyday missions. The critical missions are the ones that are truly great. (not to downplay the others) They run you all over the place. Last one i did took almost an hour. They story on each mission is great. There is actually reason for doing what you are doing. It makes you feel like a part of the world.

So far, all of the crit missions i have done revolve around the outcome of the last movie. Zion is looking for Morpheus, apparently he has gone rogue, searching for whatever is left of Neo inside the Matrix. I have been to Club Hel looking for him, all over Thomas Anderson's office building (MetaCortex), i went to the 'Heart o'the City' hotel to room 303(where the first movie started and where Neo is shot by Smith) and i found about 15 Agents searching the place. So, i went and grabbed some of my hacking abilities and threw on a Maintenance Man disguise. They had no idea i was even listening to them. It was a recon mission so i just needed to see what they had found.

Now the other missions are nowhere near as involved as that, but they do still have purpose. It gives you a sense that if you dont succeed it could lead to bad things. There is about 8 different regular mission types. Assasination, Collection, Courier, Convert, Escort, and a few others i cant think of right now. Even these missions have twists. I brought a bluepill to an extraction point(like in M1 when Neo sees the mirror) one time and when we gave the person the red pill they released a virus into our tracking system, said "you can thank the Merovingian for that one", and broke down into code. Turned out they were on of Merv's simulacra.

Anyway, you take missions, run them, get some great loot and affiliation points, and a bit of XP. When choosing a regular mission you have 2 choices, Size and Difficulty. Basically they both mean 'how long will this take', but they also mean differentt xp and story.

Crews and Factions. A Crew is made up of 3-12 people. There is a Captain and a First Mate. I think the First Mate comes where there is more than 5 people. The name of your crew is the name of you hovercraft. There apparently are benefits for being in crews and factions but they havn't said what they are yet. A Faction is comprised of 2-xxx Crews. When in a crew/faction you must pick a side to work for. You can go off and work for others, but the people you align yourself with will kick you out if they find out.

About the story...we are being told basically the same as we were told with SWG. They say there is a year's worth of story arcs written and being coded. They also say that the story arcs will not be scheduled. They will not come out in patches. Also, for each story arc, there is a different side to it.

Lets say someone who works for Zion is running along on a mission and finds an agent going around killing random bulepills. That would set in motion events that would break the truce. The humans would have every right to attack and start something big. Another scenario...there is a retreival mission that all sides have. 1 single person could finish this mission and that could sway the story. It could give the Michines somekind of advantage, or show everyone where the Exiles are most vulnerable.

For me, this is the thing that will make the game great. If they actually hold true to the way their story system will work, it will be amazing.

Crafting(Coders). Coders are very necessary. There are many coding trees for different situations. Coders can make anything. Guns, clothes, disguises, all kinds of different hacking hardware. The list of things that can be coded it insanely long. Now, the way you learn to code these items is different from anything ive seen. You need to get the item first. Then you decompile the code. When you decompile the code it breaks the item into anywhere from 2-15 codes. From there they can be broken down into Code Bits and Code Fragments. Sometimes you will find 6 Code Bits that only build up to 1 piece of code for 1 weapon.

A lot of the bits/fragments are interchangeable with like items. But there is usually 1 or 2 unique codes that arent found in everything. Coders range from general coders who can make low level eveything, or if you go down a specific ability tree in coding you could specialize in weapons and make some real cannons. I find coding to be very enjoyable. There is just soooo much to make. Also, you can learn how to make certain, high-end items from different NPC's and random drops like PDA's or cell phones.

PvP and PvE. PvP has not been fully implemented in the beta yet. There is a great Dueling system. And there are Archived Constructs. The constructs each have a few different access points. And there are 1 or 2 for each faction. The Zionist Archive is an exact model of 01 before the war. That's the machine city where all the AI lived before we waged war on them. It is so great in that construct i can hardly explain it. It is just so clean and machine like. There is nothing but metal. To get to these archives to must find an Archivist. Usually a pissed off Machine NPC. They let you in. The Archives are open PvP. Anyone can go in there and fight anyone they want. There is an honor system but it is broken right now. Killing someone who is 5 levels or less than you resluts in negative affiliation points for your faction. (remember, there is supposed to be peace)

The Devs made a post a while back when the archives were introduced that stated when factions gain enough reputation, they will be noticeable by all. therefore attackable by any opposing faction. I've yet to see this happen.

As far as what you fight...everything is humanoid. but there are things that shouldnt be there. I have fought many vampires, a couple things that i suspect were werewolves, one thing that i have no idea what it was, nor does anyone else and mainly other humans. Whether they are redpills or bluepills, or machines. There are some freaks as well. The designers must be a bit twisted cause i have seen some truly freaky NPC's. The vampires are by far the coolest looking NPC i've seen though.

A bit about Hackers. Hackers are amazing mainly for two things. They can Buff, and they get simulacra(pets). Your simulacra is a program you build in your console and load into the Matrix through you. Only very high level Hackers get simulacra. But damn do they rock. The buffs have really cool effects as well. Visually i mean. They are just like buff in any other game right now. One is 'Personal Firewall'. It makes your whole body look like a mirror, really cool effect. The other thing Hackers can do is hack the code in your items, and make them better(enchant). That is how Armor is made. Armor is only coded clothes that are taken to a hacker to make them deflect stuff.

My one complaint right now is the UI. Its not good. But i have seen it change about 4 times since i've been in and enough people complain about it that im sure it will get overhauled before launch.

I cant think of much more right now. If you have more questions just let me know and i will try to answer them. :D

From the newest Matrix Online update describing Story and Plot in MxO:

Missions provide a big chunk of the gameplay in The Matrix Online, but they are not simply a means to advance your character and find loot. From time to time, you will notice certain missions that appear as "Critical Missions" in your mission panel. These critical missions often provide insight and involvement into the ongoing story. Each Organization will sponsor critical missions and savvy players will be able to discern from these the evolving situations that are affecting the Matrix. You might even find clues that shed some light on previous or upcoming events!

Some critical missions are more exclusive than others. In these sorts of missions, you may even encounter famous Matrix characters like Morpheus or the Merovingian. Remember, because these missions are replaced by new missions on a periodic basis, not everyone will be able to access every mission. The Matrix Online is an evolving world, and nothing lasts forever. You may be one of the few players in the game who will ever participate in certain missions.

ImageImageImageImage

Some of the very early story-based Critical Missions are playable in beta. If you want to ensure that you get assigned to these exclusive and top-secret missions, make sure your Reputation with the Organization is as high as possible. The higher your Reputation is with the sponsoring Organization, the more missions you will have access to. Increasing your Reputation is done by performing any mission, even normal, non-critical missions. Prove yourself to your chosen Organization, and you will be recognized for your contributions.

Image

Of course, Redpills and Exiles are not the only denizens of the Matrix. They share the computer simulation with millions of Bluepills (humans that have not realized that the Matrix is a digital illusion).

The Sentinel is a newspaper written and produced by Bluepills. They often talk about boring, mundane events that don't concern Redpills, but many times, the activities of Redpills, Machines and Exiles accidentally interfere with or affect the lives of Bluepills.

Discerning players will be able to "read between the lines" and realize that the reports of "an unusual string of gang violence" or "strange break-ins" are actually Bluepill attempts to explain the results of Redpill and Exile activities. For players who want to know every possible nuance of the Matrix universe, the Sentinel is a great resource.

Story Events are real-time gameplay activities that The Matrix Online live team creates in order to move the story forward. Story Events can consist of anything from an appearance by the Oracle to the onslaught of a world altering virus that threatens the stability of the Matrix.

In each case, these events will affect players in different ways. Some might be startlingly obvious, while others are subtle and will only be realized by a select few. It will be difficult for players to predict or know for certain when an event will occur, but this is the intent. To make the most of your time in The Matrix Online, stay alert for things that look unusual or out of place. You never know when you could get swept up into the history books of the Matrix.

Excellent stuff!

Before nothing really drew me to the game. Now I will definitely research some and maybe even try it out, should I have the time.

Thanks for sharing,

Edward
