So I just moved and both my new roomates have cellphones so there was no landline to use. I have no need for a cellphone and wasn't about to pay 50 bucks for a landline that I hardly every use so I got Vonage.

So far it is really nice. for 15 bucks I get 500 minutes (just like a cell phone) and no long distance fees. The coolest part is that I can dial in to check my voicemail OR I can have my voicemail Emailed to me! Also, I can log into my account online and see what missed calls I got.

Another cool thing is that I can get an adapter to attach to me laptop and use my phone from anywhere my laptop is with an internet connection.

I love the free Caller ID and all the small little things it comes with. So far for 15 bucks a month Vonage is pretty freak'n sweet.

It looks pretty cool... but if you have a cell phone, what's the benefit? I gave up land lines a long time ago, but couldn't see any reason to go for the vonage if you already had one.

And, how was the Oprah trip, by the way?

If you have a cell phone I cannot see the advantage to vonage. I don't have one and don't want one so vonage is a great solution for me.

The Oprah thing is a trip. I was there for the filming of the Tom Cruise interview and literally stood next to Kate Holmes backstage.

A few days later we went to Oprahs apartment (an entire floor) to film a thing for this DVD she is making. I am still new so I do not have my security badge to I was not allowed inside her apartment. All day I literally stood in the hallway and was runner boy to and from the grip truck.

So I directly worked on 2 tapings and the very odd thing is I have never actually seen Oprah! I have seen her on a monitor as she taped 2 episodes on the other side of a set piece and I stood in her hallway for 9 hours but I have never actually seen her, strange.

Now we are just ripper her studio apart and installing a new set. So when you see it next season (August) you can say, Hey I know a guy how built that set (kinda lame but there you go)

Lastly, the best thing about working at Harpo is talking to a chick at a bar and she asks What do you do? and I say Oh I work on the Oprah Show. Seriously, this has worked more times in the part 2 months than and other job Ive had in several years. Only line better is I travel with a Circus, wish is the best pickup line ever. Ahh the good old days.

I don't know what it's like in the US, but over here the real benifit of VoIP (apart from breaking away from the land line) is the cost of calls. Mobile calls are so expensive that it isn't really a viable option if you use the phone that much.

One of the best options here is to go with wireless broadband and VoIP.

Ive never heard of Vonage. 500 minutes for $15 is a really good deal, so whats different about it from regular phones and whats the disadvantages?

Thus proving conclusively that Oprah is a made up computer generated Demon from hell!.... or something like that....

Rom,
If you are like me and do 90% of my communications online and there is no way to justify spending 40+ dollars a month for a landline vonage offers a much cheaper solution.

Also, being online all day I can check my voicemail via email and dload a .wav file of all my voice messages. I can also check my caller ID via an online user panel.

Also since i travel I can use my phone anywhere in the country that I have an internet connection as I do not need to phone jack only my special router (or a smaller travel attachment). So for me it is an excellent cheaper alternative for someone who doesn't make a lot of phone calls.

Also, one cool thing is you pick your area code. So even though you live in Chicago you can get any area code from anywhere in the US. This way your friends do not have to spend longdistance dollars talking to you.

That's pretty cool. My company has a "hotelling" system, so that no one has an assigned desk or computer or cubicle. We have 110,000 people, and so you can work from anywhere you want (that makes sense to the clients). So, if I need to work out of the Chicago office, I just go online and reserve a cubicle there for up to two weeks. Work from home, no problem.

I find that because of this, I hardly ever use voicemail, and just do all my talking via email, Blackberry, IM or my cell phone. The added bonus of being able to charge in my telecom bills makes it nice, and then I'm accessible anyway (especially for that 6 hours a week of layovers in airports).

It would be cool if they could somehow combine the coolness of Vonage with the ubiquity of cell phone access...
