From what I can tell, it was written in 1984. I doubt I played it until 1985 when it was translated for the C64.Here is a random linkabout the game.

Yeah, it was released too early for me to have played it. It's nice that the creator releases them for free now. It's a shame they can't do that for the Wing Commander games as my collection has a few holes in it.

Elite was awesome. It was a space trading - roaming - fighting game, sort of like Privateer. No real plot, just do what you want kind of thing.

It was also the only game AFAIK that did not feature atmospheric flight, but true space flight. It took a while to get used to it, but it was just soo cool.

Didn't it feel good when you finally had enough credits to buy the auto-docking computer? What a challenge for a noob to the game to get your alignment and rotatation right just to enter a space station!!
