Since Antan started a good thread about Scifi books, why not make a similar list on Fantasy books/authors? :)

Such a list would have to include JRR and LoTR of course, but after that I imagine most peoples lists would differ.

My list includes:
- Ian Irvines quadrilogy "The view from the mirror" (just finished those)
- Fritz Leibners four books on Lankhmar about Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser
- George R.R. Martins "A game of thrones"
- Anything by Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman (particulary Good Omens, co-authored by the pair)
- Stephen Kings Darktower series ( though not sure if that counts as fantasy or scifi)

Fantasy, for me it would be:

1) RA Salvatore's Dark Elf Trilogy: "Homeland", "Exile", and "Sojourn";

2) Followed by some of his older books in his Legend of Drizzt series: "Legacy", "Starless Night", "Passage to Dawn".

I am not as fond of his new stuff. Perhaps it is because I hardly have time to sit down and enjoy reading, maybe I will give the new stuff another try once school is over.

Terry Brooks is by far my favorite (besides LoTR anyway). His Shannara series is excellent!

CS Lewis's Narnia series is also worth a read, if you've never read it.

And I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a raving Harry Potter fan, and I'm currently very much enjoying the 6th Potter book. :P

Yeah, I'm loving the Harry Potter books. The sixth was by far the best.

The Amber chronicles are my overall favorites. Roger Zelazny is simply amazing. He has a number of other ones as well.

The Lord of the Rings books were great... though parts dragged at times. It's hard to describe voyages of hundreds of miles without discussing what everyone eats and drinks and how tired your feet get, though.

I remember the RA Salvatore's Dark Drizzt books were my favorites from a few years ago. They were from the Forgotten Realms series, though it's been a long time since I read them. Oh, I see that Cyrus already got those.

Beowulf is also great if you never read it in school. It's neat to see how many modern day legends and tales relate back to it.

The Terry Brooks Diskworld ones are good, though the humor starts feeling a bit "forced" after 20 books.

I have about a dozen Forgotten Realms novels on my bookshelf. The two main collections being Ed Greenwood's Elminster Series and the Avatar Series written by Troy Denning and a few others.

Of course, there's Lord of the Rings along with The Hobbit and The Sillmarillion. I would only recommend The Silmarillion if you are a hardcore fan, it's a very heavy read and took me several attempts to get through it.

Harry Potter is worth reading, not the best written series in the world though, haven't started the 6th book yet, rest of my family are reading it first!

I heartily recommend Trudi Canavan's Black Magician Series. I really enjoyed them and the last book kept me enthralled until the moment I finished the final page.

Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" Series (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) - highly recommended, as is most stuff by Pullman.

Edward
wants to recommend Stephenson's Baroque Cycle somewhere, but it's neither SF nor Fantasy

Should we start an "Other" thread? Historical Fiction?

The original Dragonlance series and the Test of the Twins I think it's called are some of my favorites.

I'll pipe up again about Warhammer. Good fantasy stuff too.
