My Laptop has been getting BSOD's lately.
At first it would just hang and lag during multitasking with several aps open. Then it started getting 0x000000f4 errors with BSOD. Then it started getting 00F4 errors and finally UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

After a recent restart it autoran chdsk and I seemed to be able to start it up fine now. The system is still a little laggy but atleast I was able to launch and back up critical files.
BTW: MOZ Backup is a real lifesaver!

If anyone knows the causes of these problems or any tips ot track it down it would help.

I 'think' it all started after a very hot day where my lappy may have overheated but not really sure.

Sounds like critical windows files were damaged during a hard drive error...

A full format and reinstall should fix it.

After running Chkdsk and propping my laptop up a bit for better air flow things seem to be ok.

The Lagging has not returned yet. I'll try and overwork it tomorrow in the heat to see if it has any issues still.

for now I have my fingers crossed that all may be well but I have full backups already burned just incase.

well I fired up the laptop this morning and after leaving it on for about a hour I looked over and had a BSOD 00F4 error.

I do not have 'original' XP disks so I worry about doing a re-install.
Anyone know how to make a startup disk for CD? I don't have a floppy on my laptop and want to run chkdsk.

Can you boot up in safe mode (hit F8 when booting), and then let it run an hour to see what happens.

From here, you should be able to turn on the ChkDsk program (though it might trigger on next reboot).

This could also be a bad RAM problem. If you do get another BSOD, try taking all your ram out, and only put one chip in at a time to see if you still get the same problem.

Also, make sure you reseat all of your cards... This could be a bad connection with a HD controller or something, as well.

Ahh! I'll have to add that to my list of accronyms along with CTD

It's going to be a RSOD soon.

BTW, I believe in order to use Windows Update with XP now, you need a valid (non-pirate) version. Don't know the full details, but something to consider.

Not really. They did a shoddy implementation of a license key verification that can be easily bypassed. I am not even sure it counts as a "technical measure".

BW, what does CTD stand for? Capture The Disk?

Yeah. From http://www.boingboing.net/2005/07/28/mi ... ne_ad.html

Microsoft "Genuine Advantage" cracked in 24h: window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all'
AV sez, "This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours."

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

It turns off the trigger for the key check.

I have yet to see any updates on either of my comps. Has anyone had to re-enter their serial yet or use the hack?

Those bastards at MSFT...gave me a hard time when I was rebuilding my computer...said I had installed my OS too many times and shut down the license key...and I had a legit copy!!!! After talking to a CSR I finally was "granted" an additional install.

Same thing happened with me at Norton. I have a legit copy and little did I know that you can only install it 12 times before your copy 'expires'. After many a nasty email I had the reset me code for another 12 uses.

And they wonder why we pirate.

Precisely. I honestly tried to be legit for about a year. Finally, after buying music online (I know, I know, don't laugh) and then discovering a specific device was needed to easily play the music I recognized media vendors (including software) for the vampiric scabs they are. Gimme an eyepatch, parrot and peg leg, no hesitation, no regrets. :)

When something is truly worth the money being asked for it, I'll gladly pay. In the case of my example, World of Warcraft, it's not like I have a choice but it doesn't bother me to pay for a service/entertainment like WoW.
