In a decisive move this summer I have attempted to crush the rebellion in one swift stroke. Well... not exactly, what I did was load up my summer schedule with the most difficult classes left for me to take.

CM 3400 Construction Materials
PHYS 2002 General Physics II
CM 4201 Construction Law
MGT 4620 Human Behavior in Organizations

In the past I have made straight As in the summer. I think I owe my good summer grades to the fact that classes are crammed together day after day, I don’t have time to forget anything, and I don’t have the luxury of procrastinating. So the logic this summer is pile it on, hope the good grade streak continues, then have an easy final fall semester with only one trouble class.

Classes started Monday and I am already feeling the pressure. Lots of reading, and not much time to figure out what these professors are expecting from me this semester. Except for Physics, the classes are cool and very applicable to life/work situations after college. I just hope I can retain all this information.

Great for you! Knock em out, baby! You can do it, just grit your teeth. Usually, instructors are slightly more lenient (distracted by short skirts?) in the summer, so take advantage of it while you can! Good luck!

We don't have summer school!

I do have a project to do this summer though which accounts for a third of my marks for next semester

I also find that summer is too hot to work effectively (it's the only time of year we actually get reasonable weather!) plus the short skirt distraction also applies to the students!

I too have heard grades are generally higher during the summer but I think that would only be for the truly devoted. As was mentioned, hot weather, short skirts, and beers on patios would provide me too much distraction.

And btw, cheers to short skirts and patios!!

FYI: If I seem out of touch that is because school is killing me. To date I have been so loaded down with school work that I have trouble finding time to eat let alone get on the internet.

So if you don’t see just know that I am alright, and I will be back to my old ways after the first week of August.

Well it is over and I am still alive. I think I only wigged out only once or twice. The crappy part of it all is the fact that I threw more effort into this one semester than ever before, yet my grades loomed around a C all semester. Taken by themselves, I could have made A's in everything, except Law. Law is pure hell.

Let me tell you about law.
That class was a bitch. I had to hand write 10 to 20 pages of essay answers each night, and send in a BS memo every morning. Those two things totally sucked up all the free time I had, and it stole time away form my other classes. Then I take my midterm, all essay questions, I knew the material very well... and I score a 66. We are on a 7 point scale in construction, so that is a F.

I know the professor's mind he was tearing us down to build us up later. Some kind of sick-o tough love trip. But it did not have the right effect on my. I totally checked out. No more trying in law, its effort to performance ratio was all out of whack. So here comes the final, and I am still bitter over the 66. I had already calculated that an 18 would get me a D for the semester, 48 gets a C, and 80 gets a B. I went in pissed and aiming for a 50.... I get my test score emailed to me last night... 92.5. Holy Crap!

So I end up with:

CM 3400 Construction Materials: ?
MGT 4620 Human Behavior in Organizations: ?

Oh man.. any human behavior course if going to mess you up for the rest of your life. Why? Because from there on out you will look at everyone, every group, every social setting from dinners to your best friends party, under a microscope with an almost superior gaze like a child examining his ant farm.

No kidding, but my favorite class still was Deviant Behavior 206. Lots of good ideas.

Yep. I don’t see things the same anymore.

In my post above I talk about how Law's E to P ratio is all out of whack. It was so funny, I had learned that E to P stuff in the Human Behavior class the night before I got my law midterm grades back. When I saw my 66 I was already breaking the situation down, analyzing my reaction and how I was giving up. I was (silently) critiquing the way the professor was running the class, using what I had learned in Human Behavior.

Oh and my wife's former employer.... they were my ant farm. For every bad situation, they were my example. That employer was dissected every way possible. I probably need to send them a thank you letter for being such a good example of how to do things the wrong way.

Funny thing is, if you are good enoughh you can tune it out, and turn it off and be able to enjoy life again.

If you can't, drinking helps.

Same thing happened to me... start building software, start drinking my body-weight in Caffiene. Then, I married a German, and suddenly I drink twice as much as before. I've considered opening a Starbucks franchise, just to save some money and feed our habits.

Starbuck's doesn't franchise....I looked into it as I saw the perfect location opening up in my area. Which only has a few Starbuck's.

Actually, I've been thinking for a long time of opening a combination Starbucks, Subway and Sushi bar with a small high-quality pet-supply store and a computer-supply business. I figure these 5 areas are where I spend 80% of my money... and I'm sure others in my demographic do, too.

Starbucks is a Coffee franchise that takes medium-grade coffee and mixes it with large amounts of chocolate and overpriced treats. It's nowhere near the quality of a German coffee shop (or even Ice Cream shop), but it's got quick and efficient service, everyone's pleasant, and some of the coffee/chocolate mixes are excellent... and they're made the exact same in every store. There's over 5000 of them, mostly in America. It's become a good meeting place, where moderately-wealthy motivated young people can go and hang out and get wireless internet connections. It's considered amazing that they became so amazingly popular (with only having medium-grade coffee).

You can see StarBucks references in movies like Austin Powers (the coffee shop used as a secret base for Dr. Evil's world domination plans), or in Shrek 2 (where people in the fantasy Los Angeles-like city run out of of Starbucks across the street into another when Mongo attacks the city). A famous comic even said he forsaw the end of the world will occur when 4 Starbucks are built on each corner of a busy intersection (though, I've seen three so far at an intersection in New York City near Times Square).
