So I graduated today.

Or, at least I was notified that I got my Masters degree today.

The funny thing is that I had the credits to graduate over a year ago... but since I've been taking the program over 5 years, requirements have evolved over time. When I asked my advisor a year ago if I had enough to graduate as I had the 11 classes the brochure said I needed, he consulted his crystal ball and told me "No you need two more classes". Kinda a pain, but I took them, and paid the $6000.

After I take the classes and apply to graduate, a few months later I see a note on my online portal saying thanks for taking 13 classes, but you only needed 11. That's it.... no "Yes, you can graduate" no "You're now Master Yak"... nothing.

After contemplating breaking my advisor's kneecaps, I call the Registrar and they confirm "Yeah, the only way you know if you get your Masters is if you start getting advertisements for class rings in a few months." WTF?

I get an offer for cheap insurance from the Alumni association a little while later.. so I'm thinking... maybe this means I graduated? Not really sure, I call the registrar and ask... after 30 minutes waiting for a human to get on the line (even if it is one chewing bubble gum in my ear and using the word "um" every 3 seconds)... she says "we're not um... allowed to... um.. see that kinda info."

WTFx2?!

So, being the kinda guy I am, I just forget about the whole thing and tell everyone I have a Masters. I mean, it's mostly probable I do, right? Job interviews.. client meetings, teaching classes... when they ask I tell them that I'm bona fide. I figure if they find out differently, they'd be nice enough to let me know... as I apparently am not allowed to know.

So this morning I open the front door, and there's a diploma sitting in a plastic grocery store bag on a foot high pile of snow. No note, no letter, no ringing the bell... just a diploma with my name on it. I'm guessing because I live so close to the university, they wanted to save on guaranteed delivery and just gave it to some freshman working in the office making minimum wage.

You'd think with a $40,000 piece of paper from a high-class (i.e. expensive) university, there'd be a little bit more... "pizazz" involved.

Oh, well. I'm graduated. Can I have my forum name changed to Master Yak now?

Well deserved Congratulations!

What a nasty experience you went through. It is the problem that most colleges in this country are not run like the businesses they are. They are unorganized, inefficient and don't treat their students like good customers.

You should get a refund, and make them pay for your time too.

The really funny thing is you will probably start getting letters from them begging you for money, that is if you haven't already.

Sorry about the rant. Congrats again!!!

Congrats Yak. Sorry to hear about your experience with the educational system. If I were you, I'd at least think about writing a letter to somebody about the disappointment. Feedback to the university (if it gets to the right people anyway) could mean a lot.

Congrats! Another Master to the Avian crew! I'm not official yet. I get the piece of paper with a bit more pomp and ceremony in the cathedral that is right next to the campus in June.

..... oh and you really don't want to hear my rant about the education system :D

For once ( ;) ) you and I think alot alike. I'm one of those people who almost always goes out of their way to let someone know if they've done a good or bad job. If it's a great job, I let them and their supervisors know. If it's a terrible job, then I add their supervisors supervisor to the list.

So, have no fear that next time I am having lunch with the dean and my boss (who is the head of his PhD committee), I'll pass him a nice letter summarizing this along with names and dates.

and tell them to keep the $6000.00, but you'd like your time to be compensated at $75.00 and hour...well now that you have a masters, maybe you should charge them more :D

Congratulations on the Masters. What did you get your Masters in? (or did I miss it above)

The Masters is in Information Security.

The good thing is that if I go back there for a PhD, then both of those classes will count towards that... though I'm not sure if I want to give them another 5 years of my life.

Gratz yak. Good to know that somebody are going through their education, one way or another.

I'm still applying for a spot at the university here.
Hoping to get a bachelor degree within computer science / information science / informatics / datalogy (<- all the same, but people usually don't know what it is though I do not doubt that most of you does.)

I just feel spoiled now, since in Denmark education is free, and you're acctually getting paid for going to school as long you haven't screwed up before.

What's wrong with the Blue ones!? Though I would prefer the lightblue like Luke's saber from ANH & ESB...
