I am FireHawk, on the Pinnacle server. I kept making Cetera, but I kept ended up not liking his powers. FireHawk is a mutant blaster specializing, obviously, in fire. She's currently level 3. She came about quite on accident, as I was messing with the character creation stuff, and I rather liked the way she turned out.

What server are you guys playing on? I'll gladly make Cetera again on there if you guys aren't on Pinnacle.

Cetera,

Prime was the original server during beta, Pinnacle just came online within that last day or two. My character is on Prime (of course majority of testers are on prime). I to have created a character on pinnacle only for the purpose of server comparison (not serious play).

My suggestion for all current and future testers is to jump on Prime. This is probably a good time to find out who, what, where everyone is at and to connect and communicate via in-game email.

Thus far from this Thread I have gathered the following:

GreyDog - Level 7 Defender (prime)
Mantison - Level 5 Controller (prime)
Electricto - Level 3
FireHawk - Level 3 Blaster (pinnacle)

Please feel in the gaps for your primary character or correct what I've listed.

Let's form a supergroup (i.e guild) within the game. We need to get more details on this. Above all, have fun and take a serious look at this game. I don't have plans on buying it, but I can't deny that I'm having fun. And fun is what I put my money on. Hopefully we can get more Avian in COH beta and have more fun together.

For playing on Prime, what kind of character should I make that will complement a defender and a controller? I'm actually quite attached to FireHawk on the other server. There seems to be less rubberbanding and lag, and I've not been disconnected from the map server thingy. On the other hand, I could probably level much faster playing with you guys on the other one. I suppose I could just remake FireHawk on Prime. I need to test out all the powers. I think I might want to make a Katana character or maybe some kind of martial arts character. Is there a power type that is just fists/punching/contact brawling or something similar?

I've obviously not read up on everything, since all the forums are websensed at work, and I just got the email late last night.

New update... Been playing this game for sorta a while now and it is gettting sorta repetative (though it is still beta and still pretty fun). The main things that annoy me are the lack of soloing past a certain level and the lack of real loot. The loot thing really buggs me, a former EQ player. Not sure if this one will be played at release by me or not. Either this WoW or EQ2 I need to stick with I guess. With some luck I will get into WoW beta sooner or later to compair. (Tried Lineage2 but I don't like the PVP)

I feel your pain when it comes to soloing, especially when a good group of mature people is hard to find. I'm also an old EQ player, however, I'm finding the management of my powers and selecting the powerups to be fun. No real loot does take away from the game (as SWG lacks real loot also). Another thing that might be true with this game as in EQ is that at the higher levels I tend to find good players. The very young kids tend to have fun creating characters for the sake of creating characters with no serious strategy in gaming. The cream rises to the top, as does the better players. List your name bro so we can group someday.

Your flame guy as a blaster will be cool on Prime. We could use a tank also. The scrapper is more of an offensive tank dealing out loads of damage. Scrappers are fast and very good. The standard martial arts character. I love watching scrappers kick butt. Of course your standard tank will always get you in a group for pure damage defense. Another thing I noticed was that flying and teleporting are two excellent powers to have. I was in a group and this guy simply teleported us to the roof tops. Fantastic view and lots of fun fighting on the roof. I'm sure the other server is probably in better shape due to the reduce workload of people, and I plan on making a test character on that server also, however, some people might migrate to that server to reduce the stress on Prime.

No matter what character you pick, they all have pros and cons and there is truly no one best character. The best one is the one that you enjoy playing.

I will be on most of the weekend. See you guys around.

Oh, and Loot is Enhancements. I guarantee you see a single origin damage enhancement drop for you best power, you will dance the dance of Uber Loot like no other!!!!

I created another fire blaster on Prime, basically the same character as FireHawk on Pinnacle. Her name is Torchette. It wouldn't let me pick FireHawk again. I don't know if someone else has that name, or if during beta it is set up that names are unique to all servers.

Great. I created a controller on Pinnacle to test out that server. His name is Sonic. My main is still on Prime (GreyDog). If you want to group with higher level people, have the higher level guy make you a sidekick. Sidekick is an awesome feature, allowing you to fight with the higher level guys as if you were that level. Great xp also. I was in a group of level 12 and level 15 people (I was level 7). I couldn't hit jack while fighting level 12 and higher moobs, but once I was made a sidekick, the ass beating began. I made it to level 8 in no time.

Torchette is now a level 5 blaster. I met a pretty cool guy named Samuel that really helped me out today.

Since we're actually supposed to be beta testing the CoH game, and I actually have noticed some oddities, I was hoping that some of you that have been in for a bit could give me some advice on post or not to post, and where to post if I do post for this issue.

For some reason, every time I launch the game, even though I have the game set to my desktop resolution of 1152x864, and even though the game does launch at that resolution, it for some reason changes the refresh on the display to 60Hz, no matter what. I generally just alt+tab back to the desktop, reset the refresh rate to 85Hz, and then play just fine. Has this been discussed anywhere that you know of, and should I post it on the beta boards? Also, how do I get the game to run in a window, or is that possible?

Post that in the Technical issues forum on the Beta Boards, or search for your answers there...

I agree with Man. Check the technical boards out. I've never seen this before.. However, my normal desktop is set to 1024 x 768 (85 Hz)

Thats cool. It was good seeing you in the game. Mant and I did some serious damage to those vilians last night. We then went over to Perez Park and got in a much larger group and hit the forest. I was able to tryout my new power Revive and it was really cool to be able to bring somebody back from the dead. Mant was a no-joke power house. He has this mind controller power that puts a serious hurting on the moob's brain. It was truly fun. I was playing most of the day and night until my back started hurting so I went to bed...

Things I like that I didn't think mattered to me:

Leveling... This is addictive in nature.
Variety of powers
Powerups.. This is better than loot (IMHO). I can use these.
Group strategy and dynamics.
Everyone is fighting in this game. No mini-games, just pure ass kicking all over the city.
The A.I of the moobs and bosses is not bad.

Well, more to come. I'll check you guys out in the game. I love my defender, but I really like my controller on the Pinnacle server. Mant you rock bro. I'm going to have to start a controller on the Prime server also. It's going to be a tough decision.

Torchette on Prime is now level 8. I am quite pleased to say that this game is a lot of fun. And as Boris pointed out, leveling and powerups are quite addictive, and good goals to have. It doesn't seem like there is necessarily a whole bunch of content to this game besides fighting, but I honestly don't miss anything else at all. I'm having a blast every time I group with people, and although soloing missions takes a lot longer, it is still enjoyable.

I agree Rocklar, I've registered for Beta, but am not quite convinced to invest in the game yet.

I would recommend it, Rocklar. It is a very fast paced, action packed MMO. There are a lot of little things that are kinda clumsy and clunky, like some of the interface for chat, but overall I really like it.

No one plays/played a scrapper? I wanted to try one out for the longest but of course I didn't get a beta invite and couldn't "buy" one.

I've got a scrapper on Pinnacle that I play when I get into Prime. He's level 5 now. His name: Knighte

One thing that I've noticed is that the community of CoH so far seems very mature. More so than SWG, and way more so than what I've heard about WoW. I've grouped with quite a few people, and they've all been very kind, polite, considerate, and professional. The only bum group I've ever been in was one tonight, where we didn't have a clear direction, and half of the group got lost in a forest and couldn't get out short of dying and respawning. Mantison was there in that one, and the people are actually quite cool, and I've played with them all before, but the group dynamic didn't really work very well.

Overall, though, I've been very impressed with the playerbase.

I couldn't get on Prime last night, so I advanced my Magic Controller on Pinnacle. His name is Sonic. He's currently Level 8. Mant, Controllers work for my playing style also (they kick butt). Add hover on there and you are god like. I'm now attacking from above and staying alive with no problem. The air battle is on with this guy. And the city looks amazing from this height. I hit the hover key to turn it off, and went flying to the ground (took about 50% damage from that fall). Won't happen again. I added this new AOE power of sleep and powerup it for long sleep. This power is serious crowd control.

I was grouped with a very good scrapper. However, being so offensive, I decided to save mana for healing. A good mix.

Anyways, if I can get on Prime tonight I will be on there.

Cheers!

So this is what I have so far. Have any of you guys leveled up beyond this? Also, I've been having difficulty playing at peak hours on Prime. It won't ever let me log in, so I started a Scrapper on Pinnacle to while away some more time and become more familiar with the systems. I like him a lot.

I also have Enlil - Magic Controller - Grav / Storm on Pinnacle, currently level 2, hehe

That character is probably what I will be using in retail, my backstory goes that way....

When is this thing going gold?

Arindel,

It's my understanding that when you pre-order the game you get a beta disk. The instructions on what to do next are on the COH website forums. I received my invite into beta because I was one of the early applications (about 2 years ago).. So, get a beta disk and load it up.

4/28/04 is the date the game is to ship. You get a beta disk sent from you if you pre-order it from certain places like Gamestop.com. And you can't pre-order, have them send the beta disk and then cancel.... Plus I don't know how long it'll take for the disk to get to you if you do want to pre-order. Up to a week right for shipping is my guess (though I bet it may get to you much faster). So that'll leave you with about a week to beta test (if they run it up to the shipping date).

Oh, by the way, just got an email in my inbox today, saying the NDA has been lifted for CoH. So any screenies we want to post at this point is completely legit in order to entice you guys in to the game.

I noticed that when I take screenshots of stuff in-game, they are really really really dark. Is there some way to correct this, besides adjusting them with photoshop after the fact?

I'm not in Beta either, so it helps keep me occupied. :P

Finally got level 6 or 7...I forget...I had some much xp debt to work off :)

I got this cool new move called Air Superiority. My Mutation Blaster, Electricito, is starting to kick some real butt!

I love the fact that you can hop on for a half hour with no strings attached. Maybe SWG can give us that with the space expansion you know? Just hop in and blow some TIE's or X-wings or pirate ships up...

Am I a sucker?

I have read quite a few posts in Beta and this game just seems to be...FUN. Not a serious play it all the time game, but one you can ease in and out of?

Though I would hope they could have good guys and bad guys in the future, I think it helps to have everyone start on the same team. I was going to hold back and wait for release, but I may have to go pre-order this game.

You have no idea how many times I've asked myself the same question. The game, at face value, seems to be very lacking. The content seems small. So why is it that I am having more fun playing this game than I think I ever had playing SWG? I don't know the answer to it. The game is truly geared for a casual player, although you can certainly min/max/powerlevel to your heart's content. But the bottom line is, the game is just straight fun.

The game appeals to the kid inside everyone of us who pretended to be Super Heros when kids. Most kids I knew read Comics of some kind, and now you play SuperHero WITH your friends and fight all kinds of bad guys.

Like I said, right now, the game is liquid fun in a box. Will it last? Don't know, but for the next several months, it will be more fun than a one legged monkey in an ass kicking contest with a blind goat who has watermelons for feet.

Well that settles it then. Once it goes live I propose that any of us interested in the game get on the same server and start a Super Group in game. Nothing better than extending the community we've built here to other games that may be funner for some of us.
