Probably most of you realize this if you have renewed a subscription already, but for those who haven't you should be aware of this.

Regardless of the plan you signed up for it renews automatically. I signed up for a one year account so this hadn't become an issue for me. I also paid for a friends account via a three month payment approximately 3 months ago. I haven't played this account in over a month and was letting it lapse. Now there is another 3 month charge on my credit card. Of course now I read the user agreement (I generally only thoroughly read these after something goes wrong) and see that it is all automatic charges with no refunds. I am likely stuck paying another $42 for a game that has greatly disappointed me.

Just wanted to let everyone know this if they did not already.

That's too bad that you didn't know about that sooner. Every MMO I've played works this way, so I've been used to it.

On a related note, no matter when you cancel your account, you can continue to play it until your subscription expires. So if you know you're not going to continue beyond your current subscription, go ahead and cancel and just play it out.

This happened to me. I signed up for one month and they billed me for 3. No notification, no fucking decency... just a nice bill on my girlfriend's credit card.

*rants about another reason MEO isn't going to suck*

Yep, every game and really any RL service that is charged monthly is automatically billed to you in this same way. Want to cancel your cell phone, your ISP, your cable, maybe even your rent, you need to tell them to stop billing you in advance.

It is the way these things work, companies feed off slackers and procrastonaters. Your best way to avoid this is to tell them you are quiting in advance.

That's strange, because I assumed it was going to go automatically and every month I had to manually enter the cradit card info again. Now that I have quit, I did not do anything and my credit card statements do not show a payment to SOE. Maybe there is some difference in how you set up your account. Just in case, I will make sure to cancel it, though.

There's no other way to setup an account. Make sure to cancel, Matija, as you will be billed again if you don't.

And MEO is going to be different in regards to this? I highly doubt it. I really don't see it as a negative, either. If I had to re-subscribe every time my subscription ran out (and had to try and log on and have it tell me my account expired), that would be quite annoying.

I agree with Cyrus to a point about canceling the telephone, electricity, etc, but the analogy fails because they don't automatically go into my account and take the money regardless. I also would only get a minimal charge from my cell phone company, not the same amount I got charged when I was ringing up a bunch of roaming calls.

I believed I had purchased 3 months and no more. I was wrong.

The whole point of this is to make sure someone who thinks they are quitting after a year knows they aren't unless they go into account info and hit cancel. I don't want someone to get charged, because there are NO REFUNDS, even though Sony knows you haven't logged in a month.

When I made the mistake of giving Anarchy Online a chance (:sid: made me do it!), I quickly learned it sucked and cancelled. Funcon, however, continued to bill my CC. It took a number of emails and phone calls, the later ones getting a bit nasty. I suspect they would have continued to bill had I not reported my card lost and got a new number. Good luck getting anything reversed. :)

If you use "Bank Draft", "Automatic Debit", or "ACH" it is exactly the same. If your terms of transaction are those listed above they DO go into your account and take their money... these are the exact same terms you agreed to with SWG. These types of transactions are all over the real world, and not just a SWG thing.

However some utilities will prorate you where they only charge you a partial month accounting for only the part of the month that you used, and refunding you the rest of the month. MMOs will not prorate us :( and to make things even worse we can choose to be charged in 3, 6, 12 month blocks. Without a prorate those unwanted months add up to a lot of unwanted charges.

So everyone take Tobiasds's advice and make sure you cancel you account when you want to quit any MMO. That is the only way to quit, any other way and you will gain unwanted charges.
