The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely.

"We know how long fans have waited for this release and how much they have been looking forward to it, so everyone has been working overtime to make sure that the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is an awesome experience," said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. and the DVD collection's Executive Producer.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi will be available in a four-disc set that includes a bonus disc filled with all-new special features -- including the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films. Each of the three films in the Star Wars Trilogy has been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality.

"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer. On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the Star Wars films in a fresh and fun way," Ward said. "We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."

The films of the Star Wars Trilogy will be available exclusively as a collection and will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX. All three films are closed-captioned and subtitled in English, French and Spanish in the U.S. Internationally, sound and subtitling specifications will vary by territory.

Keep checking starwars.com over the coming months for more specific details about the content of this must-own DVD set.

Before long entire generations will believe that Greedo shot first and only we - the enlightened ones will know the real truth.

I feel like this edtion is to small. the movies might get to compacted and the extra material might be a bit short...

Well look at Alien Quadrilogy All the movies + a lot of documentary.

Or the LoTR, TTT and future RoTK extended edtions, two discs per movie

Look at the running time! Those movies are almost twic as long as any one of the OT, so the image quality should be about comparable.

I have Laser Discs with the original original really original trilogy. :p

Richard writes in to tell us that he was surprised we haven't put this on the site yet: Carrie Fisher said on UK TV yesterday that she is doing a commentary for the Star Wars DVDs! So far, Lucas has been confirmed unofficially, now add Princess Leia to the list. We would expect Hamill and others to sign shortly as well.

Skylover writes in to tell us that the official French press release for the Trilogy DVD announced that there will be exclusive cut scenes in it. Sounds great! More details will emmerge soon no doubt.

Sadly they will never ever release the original Original Trilogy, you know the one you remember from when you were kids, the one without CG Jabba or Greedo missing the broad side of a barn. Edward is sure that Han shot first!

Sadly I agree. I so very much want the original films on DVD. Compete with the boxes around the spaceships. Sadly I wil never get my wish thus I will never own SW on DvD

I have a friend who has a laserdisc dub of the original version (thx mastered) on DVD!!!! (singapore) Desirable? I think so!

If they were smart they'd include the untouched, the special edition, and the new DVD editions on each disc and you'd choose which version to watch. Either way I'm pretty excited for the extra stuff, I still own the original ones on VHS.

Its not that they cant release the originals, its just that they dont want to. George Lucas has banned anyone from ever showing the 'original' versions ever again in theatres. It would be nice to get the untouched version on DVD, but for me at least, the special editions will do just fine. I have purposely not watched my original edition VHS copies for many years - hopefully preserving them till i buy a DVD burner. I doubt very much Lucas will ever change his mind on this as he obviously feels the originals are in some way inferior. Before long entire generations will believe that Greedo shot first and only we - the enlightened ones will know the real truth. Still this announcement is the best thing since they invented DVD.

I just hope it's not that Ultimate Edition stuff that was rumoured a few months ago. Although it described han shooting first again, the rest was horrible.

Or the LoTR, TTT and future RoTK extended edtions, two discs per movie and two discs documentary per movie, that is just well great and the movies arn't compressed to much and the documentarys rock.

Wohoo, FINALLY ON DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been waiting for it so long.... I've got the originals on one VHS recorded (long-play) from the tv. But I am currently talking with the local film renting store of buying their originals.

Some older DVD players have trouble reading the double-layered DVDs, maybe that's why.

Matija, Maybe... Let me look.... Nope, each of the disks for LotR the two Towers is double layored. I bet they split it up inorder to keep from compressing the picture too much. With each of those disks holding 5.95 gigs that would mean they would have to put about 12 gigs on to a disk that holds 9. Beign that the images from the movie are so beautiful, It is probabaly a ratio that they would not have been comfortable with... besides more disks makes us fans feel special. FYI I checked into it : Star Wars Ep II is 7gig worth of movie and menues The Two Towers is 12 gigs worth of movie and menues

Each DVD can hold ~ 9 gigs when they copy two layers deep. Being that a standard movie can easily fit on 4.7 gigs, there is really no reason to make movies extend across more than one disk. LotR did it, but still to this day I do not know why. I have been ripping DVDs all this week to backup my collection. I do have to compress most of the newer ones to fit on a 4.7 gig DVD, but I swear you can not see the difference. Star Wars IV-VI should never require more than one DVD per movie. There is just not enough data for those to be split across two disks.

That's interesting Cyrus, as the max resolution on DVD is about 450 lines atm if I am not mistaken. Therefore, I don't really know what they would be compressing it down to...

It's hardly fair to compare all the extra stuff LotR has on their DVDs to what SW will be able to have. The LotR crew documented practically everything they did, filming it with the intent of adding it as special content. That really wasn't a concept back when the SW movies were made. And for the time, SW had tons of extra documentary pieces and behind-the-scenes looks. But you know, it was kinda hard for them to plan on filming a bunch of stuff as special features for something they would release two decades later.

Well, I'm definately going to get this when it comes out! As for the extra content, one disc for it would likely cover more than enough to be worth the money paid. Besides, it's probably never-before-seen footage and interviews from the period, which would be totally priceless. You also have to bear in mind that, during the filming of Epi4, they had bearly enough money to shoot the film as it is, so there would be very little cut footage or outtakes to view and they certainly wouldn't have had the funds to shoot a behind the scenes documentary like they have for the prequels.

Why would you want more discs if it can all fit on 4? Want to pay more than you already have to (I'm guessing $80-100 US for this set)? I'm looking forward to this... can't wait to get my hands on these babies. I'll shoot for buying a new TV by then
