I just saw this on the Vanguard's site:
Brad MacQuaid wrote:
Q: I was so excited about Ultima Online 2 when it was under development because if they can put out a good game the first time around, they definitely will be able to improve on a lot of things. Do you share this philosophy?
A: You give me an opportunity here to talk about something I think is important. There is, IMHO, a Ultima Online 2, and it's called Star Wars: Galaxies. When Smed & I put together the Austin Studio deal with Vogel and Koster, I know I wanted that team because Ultima Online at the time was the 2nd most popular MMOG... and it's still going decently strong today... YEARS later.

Now, I know people have issue with Star Wars: Galaxies, especially the “EverQuest style” player. But I also know, for example, that the guys who enjoyed Ultima Online here at Sigil enjoy Star Wars: Galaxies (though they have their concerns and opinions, but that's neither here nor there).

Why bring this up? Because I think it's in the gamer's interest to identify the teams and key figures in the development of games and to follow them in terms of what they might make next and what you might enjoy. For example, you read a book because of the author, not the book publisher. You watch a movie often because of the actors or the director.

Now, sure, the genre or world setting is important. I enjoyed Alien and Aliens, which were totally different movies, by totally different writers and different directors (both excellent directors). So if someone really loves the Ultima world and mythos, I'm not saying Ultima Online X or something won't be up your alley.

What do you think of this comparison? Brad MacQuaid is one of the leading people of the original Everquest, for those who are unfamiliar with the name.

Brad is talented. I think that says it all really, I think whatever game he puts his heart in will come out good for the majority of people who play it.

The people who made EQ are talented? I happen to be of the "EQ developers making other MMPs always ruin them" school of thought. SWG is the perfect example. ;)

Well, Orbital .. EQ was a pretty revolutionary product. It had and still has a huge following. There will always be problems with games, but, EQ did lots of things right. I played EQ for about a year .. had some issues with stuff .. and there are problems such as mob camping .. and, mop camping .. and, did I say .. mob camping. But, basically, EQ was and is a great game.

Was it? I thought its makers referred to it as "a DIKU mud with a graphical frontend".

And Jaero, it was not the EQ makers that ruined SWG, it was the UO dev.

I think SWG had many small flaws that will be fixed if we give them enough time. But I am getting to the point where they can fix it without my money.

Now that Holocron has been "promoted" the game has a better chance. For gamers like me, slowly making our way through content is what we like to do.... and when a game has no content we like to treasure hunt, making the acquisition of good loot a game of its self. I am not talking about EQ camping... Coming form a Diablo II background, I liked figuring out what Mobs have the potential, no matter how remote, to drop a great item... they I spend days hunting for the one that will drop the item.

In other words if the content sucks or is limited, I can still enjoy myself collecting loot.

Holocrons whole crusade for bad loot really hurt the game, couple that with no content and guys like me have nothing to do in the game other than chat with my friends in Avian.

I wasn't a big fan of EQ myself so I'm not gonna defend it to the death, but anyone who makes a game that gets the nickname "Evercrack" has to have talent.

My brother used to be a really hardcore Diablo 2 player. After he explored every part of the game, and played every class, and beat the game thousands of times, he started going on teasure hunts searching for items, for hot cool loot drops, or to even get the best items in the game. You're totally right Cyrus, these days the only thing I've been doing is basicalyl chatting with my friends in Avian. Even though theres still ALOT of content in Galaxies that will keep me busy, I find myself getting bored alot from time to time. I've recently started Tailor, and the Carbine profession because I got bored. I suppose I could do every single profession in the game....but SWG is getting boring for me...I think I either need the space expansion or a different game. Perhaps if Star Wars Galaxies had some really GREAT loot dropping system, it would be alot more fun. With all the dungeons, hunting, visiting planets, and professions I still have left, I'm sure everything will all keep me busy at least until the space expansion comes out....though I wish creatures would start dropping cool loot. In World of Warcraft going on "Treasure Hunts' will probably, and most likely be ALOT of fun. From what I read it seems like it will be as fun as Diablo 2 was. When I get bored with WoW, I can start doing loot searching like my brother and I did with Diablo 2; searching for loot kept us happy for years. I remember seeing a screenshot from WoW of a treasure ship underwater; that sounds pretty cool. I can't wait to swim under an ocean or whatever, and discovered some buried treasure! :) hehe
