As a continuation of the "Army is Calling" thread and to satisfy my curiousity, I'm wondering how many people here know about the story of Dunkirk (as in the Allied forces retreat from, during WWII).

Please fill out the poll or comment as you wish.

In a nutshell, Dunkirk was the last piece of French soil that the British troops that were in France assisting them with the defense against the Nazis fell back to. There were so many troops, and so few able military vessels, that anything that floated was mustered into service on the British coastline and evacuated the Troops literally in the nick of time, before the German onslaught slaughtered them.

One of the best examples of the "Everyman" doing his part in defense of his country.

Tugboats, fishing trawlers, pleasure craft, etc. If it floated and could cross the Channel, it went.

Well there was a fair chance I spelt it wrong but I think that's how it's spelt in English.

Manti summed it up rather well. The thought of it occured to me when discussing what the "oridinary" person could do to help on the other thread and this was the best example I could think of.

Appearently, initially the call went out for people to supply vessels for the evacuation (there has been a long standing law in this country that any person in ownership of a sea worthy vessel must surender it for use of the country when commanded to do so). It quickly became clear that there was not enough military personal to man the boats and certainly not well enough train in using them, so the owners actually insisted on driving them themselves.
