ok I got my MoBo and CPU today (thanks Cetera for pointing me in the right direction).

My CPU came with its own Heatsink but the instructions where only a diagram with no text what-so-ever. It said nothing about needed any Thermal Glue or anything.

Should I just install it or shoudl I use some thermal stuff?

Does it have the little gray pad on the heatsink? If so, and you don't plan on doing any overclocking, then you should be fine. Place the heat sink on the processor (there should probably be an outline on the mobo as to placement) and secure it with whatever method it has. Mine has some big plastic clamp thingies, but there are all types. It is pretty hard to screw it up, so don't be too nervous or anything. Try and keep any torque-ing(twisting) to a minimum. It can damage the heatpad, and you want perfect contact.

If you don't have a heatpad on the heatsink, then it should have come with thermal paste. Apply it to the processor in as even a coverage as you can. The heatsink will squish it and help even things out, so don't worry about that. Don't get too much on to where it squished out and then touches the mobo, because it is a good conductor and can screw things up.

If you have the thermal pad, and you want to use the paste (it will work better, especially if you overclock, I personally have the pad and have never had a problem) then you'll need to talk to Obo or someone else, because I've never messed with taking the pad off to use the paste. I imagine you'd just peel it off, but I don't know.

yeah I have the Pad. I have no plans on overclocking so I should be all set.

Can't wait to get it all hooked up!

OK I got the CPU installed ok (I think) and I connected the new MoBo and the several dozen wires there in. But I am not getting any power.

I get a green led on the actual MoBo but that is it. No fans, no nothing. I've checked the Front Panel connectors as best I can but the diagram is rather confusing.

Any trouble shooting tips?

sorry no digital camera.
I am almost sure that the problem is in the front panel connections.
I went to the Intel Trouble shooting site for my MoBo
http://intel.com/support/motherboards/d ... 011574.htm
IntelĀ® Desktop Board D865PERL
I double checked and my processor is compatible.
I am looking at the pins for the front panel connection. I am sure that is where my problem is. I disconnected all the LEDs until I can get the Power and Reset working, then I'll add the LEDs as I am not sure which pin is Pos or Neg.

Here is the front panel connection chart. I read that Power and Reset do not have a Pos or Neg but the LEDs do. But no where does it say which is which. My cables coming from the front panel do but not the MoBo itself.

On the mobo itself it should have little tiny letters that tell you what goes where. Next to where the case wiring connects to the pins, it'll have something that says "PWR." That's the one that you want to connect the power button to. I honestly don't think it really matters if you have pos to neg or neg to pos, because all your doing there is completing the circuit when the button is pressed. HDD goes to your harddrive activity LED, RST is your reset button, etc. I'll take a look at mine when I get home and see if I can give you any more assistance.

OK I got an old HD and was going to install Windows ME (yeah yeah yeah it's the only disk I have) When I boot from the CD-ROM I get the error

Code:
Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device

I'm about to just give up.

Yeah, you're probably hosed. If you don't have XP Pro install key, then the copy I can make for you won't do much good.

I think you can buy an OEM XP Pro for about $100, but you probably have to buy some piece of harware at the same time. If that's the case, RAM is always a good option if you have the slots for it, or another HD, something cheap like a power supply, etc.

well 24 straight hours is about my limit. I just placed my 9800 pro into my old, slow Celeron Comp until I can figure out what is up with my new one.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I could be wrong, but isn't this just asking you to check the boot sequence in the BIOS? as in make sure that it is set to look for the CD-ROM drive when booting...or "Insert Boot Media" is just saying put in the boot disk?

If you havn't tried already go into the BIOS and change look for the
Boot Sequence set it to something like [CD-ROM,A:,C:]

Then save and exit, and try starting the computer with the ME disk then...unless you've already tried this...

yeah I checked the BOIS and I even tried the CDROM as 1 2 and 3 but nothing. I double checked that the HD and CDROM are in the right slots HD in 1 and CDROM in 2.

I dont know.

And it does find the CD-ROM in the BIOS? That means the drive should be working. Is the CD OK, no big scratches or anything?

I think I read somewhere that you'd be able to play it on Linux soon.

What sort of disc is windows on? Is it a file copy of an original, or is it an original disc itself?
Did you remove everything but the CD drive from the boot sequence and then try? (if possible with your BIOS).

its the original disk itself. I even tried putting in a new HD but it had a Mac format :(
I did try the BIOS CDROM solo thing.
I am using that same drive back in the original comp it came in direct from Microcenter.

Interesting enough I did boot the new MoBo with my roommates drive that has Win ME and it was fine. So clearly the issue is in that my HD is from a Factory with pre-installed software OS on it.

In the end what I need to do is format my HD, buy a OEM version of XP and just start from there. But it is curious that I placed the Win ME disk in and it did not boot from there.
