 Post subject: disk defragmenting

OK, time for me to ask some help... :)

My computer is clogging up and I am trying to clean it out. You know, deleting unused programs and temp files and trying to defragment my harddrive. I have used the Windows system tool twice in a row now, but the drive is still VERY fragmented. The graphic representation has it at about 75% red, which is really bad, I think.

Does anybody have any good tips on improving the performance short of backing up my data and reformatting the hard drive?

What version of Windows do you have? If you are using XP, the graphical representation can be misleading. If you have one file that is 100GB, and it is split into two fragments, it'll show the whold 100 GB as being red and fragmented. Use the report it gives you after analysis to see how many fragments there actually are.

In order to get it to defrag your drive with any luck at all, you need to have at least 15% disk space free, and preferably around 20% or so. Even then, if it has been a really, really long time since you've defragged, you'll probably have to do it two or three times to get things sorted out the best.

I am using Windows 2000, I have 19% disk space free and have not defragmented in 2 years 8)

I am currently tampering with it, I looked at the support site at micro-brain-soft-d**k and it basically says what you are saying to do :) Seems like you are speaking from (painful?) experience (at least judging by your own requests for help here ;) ).

Well, I have messed my computer up more times than anyone has a right to. And when I do, its generally 'cause I'm doing something that I shouldn't, and have never done before. Those two make a dangerous combination. The rest is personal experience, reading up on stuff, talking to others, and then doing tech support. You learn a lot of weird things that can go wrong by helping people fix those things over the phone.
