If anything I've written is incorrect, or a bit twisted, please feel free to correct me.

Did you know the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt held all the World's knowledge? A long time ago, Scientists found drawings, and sketches of a battery from ruins in Egypt. This indiciates that long ago someone devised a way to make a battery using copper wire, and some jars filled with some liquid to generate current and make a battery. The destruction of this library could've set back the human race 1000 years in technology. We have no way of knowing what other great things and knowledge this library contained because it was destroyed...hopefully we will uncover more things. The library was destroyed containing all the worlds knowledge, and then the dark ages came, and everything was lost or forgotten; we had to start over again, but hey I gues thats just life. We go forward, then go backwards two steps, then fowards again, hehe. Just think, imagine if the library wasn't destroyed, and more and more people knew about the knowledge, and the battery, we would be so advanced today.

Being a History major, and probably a minor in Archaeology or Anthropology, this just interested me.

I guess they really should have IMPLEMENTED the internet instead of just inventing it. Then they wouldn't have had a problem when the Library was destroyed.

But seriously, the act of inventing something is often a minor achievement when compared to making it available for use. Over the course of history I'm sure you know there are many examples of taking something already invented, and applying it to a problem to great effect. This is often the REAL genius.

The Royal Library of Alexandria was founded by Ptolemy II. What most people don't know is that it was actually only a part of the Royal Museum which was only a part of the Royal Palace quarter of the city of Alexandria.

There are actually 3 different stories of how it was destroyed and who destroyed it. All three stories hold a different individual accountable. A Roman, a Christian, and a Muslim have all been accused of holding responsibility for the vandalism. Respectively, Julius Caesar, Patriarch Theophilus of Alexandria and Caliph Omar of Damascus have all been blamed.

During the middle ages an earthquake and a flood put the entire palace quarter of the city underwater, making it virtually impossible to gain much from excavation, from my understanding. There are multiple sources of history we can pull from in order to better understand the fate of Alexandria. I've personally read most of Titus Livius's works (commonly referred to as "Livy") who is one of the most reliable historians of that period. Fun stuff.
