My wife has been converted. Her hunger is no match for me, but as the years go by I am rubbing off on her more and more.
When she started working for a new credit union, she told them that they needed to get her a better PC or the deal was off. When she got the PC the MIS guy tried to stick her with an old used dingy monitor. She called the CEO and had a huge new matching monitor by the end of the week… and the MIS guy got an ass chewing because the episode embarrassed the CEO.
The other day she fixed some networked printers at her credit union while her boss and coworkers sat there dumbfounded. She has gotten to the point where she does not think highly of her companies MIS guy. I find this hilarious because if you knew her, she does not come off computer savvy, and she never acts like she is listening to me when I’m teaching her things. So I get very proud when I hear of her fixing things, or using her PC to make work easier.

On the subject of not knowing computers:
I attended group interview last night... it was more of an opportunity for this company to tell us about themselves. The real one on one interviews were to come the following day.
Anyway, my keen eye picked up in the fact that the guy was not very computer savvy. He was not familiar with the laptop being used, and he was not familiar with basic computing details. By all accounts the presentation was great and the guys were top notch.... but after the show I could not help wondering why such unskilled guys were sent to meet with us students.
Is this company’s corporate culture anti-geek? Are these guys the real thing or a couple of posers? Those were the kinds of questions running through my head. I understand that the Construction Industry is not bleeding edge high-tech, but come on; these guys are posing as middle and upper management. It is my experience that project management of the 1 to 10 mill range requires a good deal of computer proficiency… let alone the 50 to 100 mill range this company was advertising.
In the end I did not sign up for the one on one interview. There were many other reasons why I did not sign up for the interview besides the above computer issues. But deep down they were not geek enough for me.
