Does anyone know of a switch box, docking station type device that would allow you to plug all the usual PC connections into (two monitors, keyboards, USBs, speakers, joystick etc) that would sit on your desk and then cable off to another room where the actual PC would be?

The sound of 8 fans running in my PC is finally making me crazy to the point that I want to put it in a different room altogether so that I can work in peace.
The switch boxes I've seen are rather limited and only let you go a few metres, and I want to go at least 20m.

I need the find the uber switch box, repeater, whaterver!

For a normal KVM, I've seen cables go up to 4 meters... I think any more than that, and you have too much signal degredation... though you might try longer if you need it.

You could Have one laptop/quiet machine up front and then TerminalServ into the others... but then you won't have fast enough refresh rates for playing games.

There are other specialized ones that allow that, but they're usually for 30-100 machines across a datacenter and cost upwards of $1000 per box...

If you do get a KVM, make sure you get a digital one! I had an analog and it sucks for any fast screen rates/high resolutions.

Digital is the way to go :)
Dont forget you can get IP based boxes that uses ethernet cabling between seat and server.

The KVM extenders I'm finding using CAT5 only seem to have a single VGA and 2 PS/2 connections, or just USB. Looks I might have to get a few.

KVM w/USB ports + USB hub maybe?

Actually I think some of them act as a USB hub themselves

This would seem to be the perfect one, but I'm guessing it's slliiightly expensive.

Found something in a norwegian computer store called "Goodway Cat5 KVM Extender PS/2 " which sells for about $200 I think.

Basicly two boxes connected by Cat5 cable, but only with VGA(D-SUB) + 2xPS/2

There was also one called "Aten Cat5 KVM Extender USB" which is about $550 pr box I think, and that one has 2 x USB, 1 x D-Sub (female),
1 x D-Sub (male), 1 x RJ-45

They have a few other variants up to $1500 which also takes USB, TV, +++
