The ESAs Huygens probe landed on the surface of Titan today (Saturn’s largest moon, and the only solid body in the outer solar system with an atmosphere). The probe landed and survived to transmit for over two hours on the surface to the nearby NASA Cassini spacecraft.

The first image from the surface has just been released...

Another image I saw on NASA TV showed a shoreline and drainage channels on the terrain (not necessarily water) captured during the descent.

[edit] which is this one...

Those shots are amazing. So many worlds, so little time!

they only expecting the battery to last minutes.

An hour an a half to 2 hours of footage is quite remarkable.

Ah and what a value for 2 hours. A cool hundred million dollars perhaps for these shots?

Kinda mind boggling how much gets spent on this but I guees we need to take baby steps if we ever want to reach that galaxy far far away.

We could take giant steps, if the space program had more money.......but now with private companies and organizations taking part, that may come a reality in the years to come...Rest assured I will be piloting some form of a spacecraft in the years to come.

If you're seriously thinking of piloting one, you need to Join the Air Force as a Pilot... seriously. That's where all the astronauts come from... and where all the civilian test pilots came from.
