AD&D has always held a special place in my heart and I am forever trying to recreate that excitement I felt playing tabletop RPGs as a kid. however jobs, wives and drinking have made this a difficult endeavor... I've tried a few play by post games on yahoo etc. but they always seem to fizzle out. I was hoping should there be enough interest within Avian that we could start a new sub-chapter or if we have the interest but we and/or the other Avians don't want the Avian name associated with a PBP game we could start our own independant thing. anyone interested? questions, comments, concerns? please feel free to PM me or reply here!
Shawn

I used to play it a lot. I may be interested, though I'd like to know the details of how it would work.

Hmmm. That would be very interesting. Do you have any good pointers to how they work? I'm guessing you have one DM, and they control the pace of the game. This could get very interesting, especially in bringing back our fizzled-out Role Playing forum...

I have no experience with tabletop D&D but, as others, I'm definitely interested in learning more.

I would be interesting in hearing more. never played AD&D itself but have played several other table top games in the past, never have time for it anymore.

wow, more responses in the first day than I thought I'd get at all! I'm really tired right now but I want to post a reply before any interest fades! the basic premise of PBP is that the DM makes a post about what the chars see, NPC actions etc, and everyone has 24 hours to post responses. this is usually done via private messageboard (Yahoo Groups work great). of course this method takes far longer than standard tabletop games and the lack of real time interaction forces a focus on roleplaying and storytelling. in the simplest games the DM makes all rolls and informs the players of the results but there are programs and mailers out there that will generate rolls and send e-mails with the results in real time. I like PBP because it allows a variety of players with wildly different schedules to all play together and the aforementioned focus on storytelling and RP also foster a great opprotunity for some colorful characters and stories.
if anyone is serious about doing this I would be more than happy to set up a Yahoo group and DM a few modules. if anyone is familiar with Living Greyhawk I have a metric assload of mods I could use to form a complete campaign should this take off.
here's a link to a Yahoo Groups PBP game. I know nothing about this game nor am I affiliated with it in any way, I just did a quick search for games that allowed lurkers so if anyone wants to browse an example of what I had in mind follow this link: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/slpostplay/
and read the messages section. the best range of players is 1 DM (I'm willing to do this) and 2 to 4 players. if we get that many interested let me know and I'll set us up!
Shawn

I used to play a lot of AD&D way back, but what we did when our group split up was to carry on in NWN, that worked pretty well.
Our DM was good at making new levels and programming new tricks in NWN so we ran a campaign there.

This reminds me a lot of the Amber Diceless RPG games that we used to have. Great stuff -- even the tabletop versions were all diceless. Everybody sat around, and the Game Master basically just had people do whatever made for the best story.

Count me in, it's been way too long since last time I played AD&D.

Sounds greatm but I'm afraid the timing might be trouble.

Though I think I haven't played since edition 1.0.

Okay, count me in. I don't have any of the books anymore, but I did it so long that most of it is probably burned into my brain.

I have always wanted to play D&D, but no one I know seems to want to play. If you can stand a n00b, I would like to play.

I'm in. What's the general differences between the AD&D rules and the 3.5 edition rules?

the biggest difference is the implementation of the feats system instead of secondary skills and some combat rules. prestige classes, monster loot tables and a few other minor things. it all really depends on how you run your campaign if you'd ever really notice the difference. I think it's a bit more streamlined and makes for a smoother campaign but a good DM and active players are what makes a game, not the rulebook =D

Hey Shawn. What benefit do Yahoo Groups as opposed to running the game here? Just curious.

what benefit? not much honestly. the main reason I wanted to do a yahoo group is that I didn't want to clutter up the forums with stuff that not everyone would be interested in. the yahoo group also has that sidebar where folks can link character sheets, a files section where the DM can post maps and a tables section which is handy for tracking the party's HP spells and money. yahoo groups format lends itself very well to PBP gaming. possibly most importantly, I anticipated being the DM for this endeavor and I was already comfortable with the yahoo format. if there is a overwhelming desire of the PBP players to move back here and it is ok with the Avian site admin we can easily make the transition.

I don't care one way or the other. You're the DM, and I think whatever you're most comfortable with is fine. Just wonderered.

I do like all the handy links section and everything in the yahoo groups but I prefer the messaging system here. I think it would be useful to have a forum here for D&D anyway, so that we can discuss D&D things not directly related to the campaign.

What I'm not saying is that we move the gaming set up here.

Yeah, the message system is annoying in the Yahoo group.

No. Let's see how this works out first. If it turns out to be something we can do on a longterm basis and still remain fun, then we can talk Avian Wing.

Where's shawn? Thought he was going to kick this thing off this weekend? :P

yeah I know I said this weekend but I keep forgetting that none of you know that the weekend = tuesday & wednesday to me. I work sat & sun and don't get much of a chance to do much internet related. add in superbowl drinking and I didn't get shit done on-line. once I we get this kicked off and the game gets going I can make DM posts from work so I *promise* things will start flowing asap!

Nice character though, btw.

If you knew how much XP a pink elephant is worth, you'd be sending Shawn as much booze as he can possibly down

Not sure they could be taken down by three Level 1 dudes though.

So he starts seeing pink elephants as well?

Edward
wonders why it has to be the old and clunky AD&D when you now have new, slick, shiny and oh so colorful 3rd Ed. You even get webbooks to convert the wonderful Birthright setting to 3rd Ed.
