This story made me laugh because I bought a 7100t about a month ago...and it has all these IM tools already installed...but if you read the announcement it makes it sound like its something coming up...not already in the market.

On the flip side, as I get older and more cynical and paranoid...I begin to wonder how much filtering, watering down, and out right manipulation occurs in the media...much more so than the recently left / right bias claims made against specific organizations.

I always heard the Christian Science Monitor was a well balanced, or "impartial", news service.

What say you?

I stopped watching Fox, CNN and basically most everything else mainstream. I occassionally flip it on, only to be disgusted within minutes. Somewhere around 98% of their content is crap I could care less about. Michael Jackson is a freak, Terry Shivo is a sad story, and Scott Peterson should be tortured and executed. But I couldn't care any less about hearing every friggin detail over and over and over again.

Things that are really important to this country, and around the world aren't being covered because apparently the "news" networks get better ratings for the ridiculous rather than reality.

I get my news from the blogs. www.ravnwood.com, http://geekwitha45.blogspot.com, and pretty much everybody they have linked from those two sites is where I go for my news and commentary.

I think you are right X2...did I mention along with cynicism and paranoia that memory loss also comes with age :wink:

There are new folks around the boards and it never hurts to re-visit some topics...

I like the BBC...they are a bit Euro-liberal for my tastes, but I try and be careful not to become too American-centric in my news or opinions (at least without checking out other sources :D ). I say this having spent half almost half my life overseas.

So we've also got a couple blogs and the BCC.

I agree with you Talon. I took some courses in college back in the early 90's when the sensationalization of the news was really beginning to tap widely into the 4th estate.

Where else you folks turn to for objectivity?

I hit pretty much all the sources.... CNN, BBC, Blogs, Drudge, AP Newswire, Rueters Breaking news feeds...

And I always figure everything I read is written by folks who couldn't get a real job and now they are "journalists"... pretty much the lowest possible form of life. But thats just my opinion...

One fo my fraternity brothers is Monica Lewinsky's brother. You wouldn't believe the lack of accuracy in some of the stories that came out back during the entire scandal. We had Hard-Copy try to break into our parties on Friday nights.

There was a 5-page Time news article about each member of their family. The person they claimed was Monica's mother... neither Monica or her brother had ever met or heard of before. The woman was just some random lady that was completely unrelated to their family.

Or, watching what CNN was reporting during Operation Iraqi Freedom... versus what we were watching on the Pentagon. 80% of it was complete and utter nonsense. About 10% was accurate.

Oh yeah, and btw.. BBC.... Isn't BBC a state-funded news organization? If so, you'll never be able to trust a word they say. Even less so than CNN or Fox.

Great, I'll just go sign up for my visitors pass at the Pentagon. I'm sure my out of date security clearance will get me right in... :wink:

which brings me to an interesting idea / point:

One of you all..I think it was Talon... posted about how "the government" had either passed or was about to pass a bill regulating blogs. Didn't read all about it so I'm not too sure about the level of censorship / regulation...

My thought was based on what we've said previously (e.g inaccuracies, sensationalism, etc), your only source of reliable news came from stitching your own quilt of blogs together?

- Drudge for entertainment / scandal although I'm not sure Drudge would pass the objectivity test...
- Talon's blogs on certain libertarian viewpoints related to issues of the day,
- BBC for world news (good point Talon)
- Jane's for defense / war related news (i'm not sure if Jane's is accurate or not...but given Yak's comments and my inability to sit in Pentagon briefing rooms...) it's an option.

hmmm...

The Bill in question is McCain-Feingold. More info can be found at the second blog I posted a link to above. There are a ton of links with info from the McCain-Feingold Insurrection sites.

As of yet, no level of censorship has been imposed. If at some point you start seeing your favorite blogs disappearing off the internet, you may want to start wondering though.

The BBC is funded by the Television Licence Fee in the UK.

So it is effectively paid for by the viewers.

I'd trust them way more over the likes of the main US networks to be honest. Although probably to a lesser degree now with the after-effects after the Hutton Enquiry (the government imposing more of an influence).

Other than the news on the radio here and the Irish Times, I mainly use Google News (customised of course).

Yeah, obviously Locke is young enough that he believes in Democrats and their media. For a student of history, I'd also recommend reading a dash of Fox News in there... not because it should align with your personal view of how the universe should behave, but for the complete opposite reason... because that's where learning comes from.
