Anybody have any thoughts on mice? I'm currently using a Microsoft Wireless Optical 2.0 and it has a tendancy to stick every little bit, for some unknown reason. Anybody know what I'm talkin' about and have any suggestions on how to fix it?

I could just go back to tried and true generic mouse, but I was sick of pickin' lint out of the rollers every few months because it was... sticking. 6 in one, half a dozen in another, it seems to me.

You're rechargeable batteries might need to be replaced. Put some real batteris I assume they are using AA) into the mouse and see if the unstick problem gos away. I noticed this on my wireless mouse.

The sticking would happen when your mouse timed out (basically a 30 second interval or as much as 10 minutes)

So, I was 50 feet underground in a military command center when the lieutenant at the table next to mine started having this problem (though it was with excel, not any MMORPG and with a wired, not wireless).

I suggested that her mouse might be dirty and needs to be cleaned. The next day, she brought in a bucket of soapy water, and... dipped her mouse into the soapy water. As it was still plugged in.

I freaked and asked her what the hell she was doing, and she blamed the broken thing on me telling her to clean her mouse. I walked over and showed her how the bottom unscrewed and the ball came out. She said every time she had heard someone talking about mouse balls before she thought it was a stupid sexual joke. She hadn't even realized that there was a ball there or anything.

Anyway, back on target... have you tried changing what you're rolling it over? Some materials don't bounce the laser beam well. If that doesn't work, try pluggin into a different USB port, if not, try re-downloading the drivers. If not that, dip it in some soapy water.

I use a Logitech Marble Mouse. It took a while to get used to, but I won't go back to using a normal wired mouse or a wireless one now.

I'd do what Yak said; try changing the surface.

Wow, Yak. Our security is obviously in good hands. WTF? How do people survive with the kind of intelligence displayed daily by most of them. Its a good thing your basic sex drive is so powerful, or I'm sure the human race would completely die out as most people wouldn't be able to figure out that either.

Edit: I forgot to talk about the thing I wanted to in this post. I use the MS Mouse 2.0, the wireless optical one, and I love it. It is the smoothest, most precise mouse I've ever used, bar none. I had one with a keyboard combo, but I didn't like the keyboard, so I took it back and got logitech stuff. The mouse was junk in the combo (to be honest the keyboard isn't that great either) and I had to go buy the Microsoft Mouse again seperately. I couldn't live without it. It is so darn comfortable, I love the smooth scroll wheel, and it performs marvelously.

ROFL!! Thanks for that Yak. I'll try changin' the batteries first, and if that doesn't work, I'll try the surface. Thanks guys.

I'm sticking with the good 'ol ball + wire mouse. Nothing can beat that.

I have to use the standard mouse. I can't use opticals because I'm a CAD drafter, and the opticals don't track as accurately. Opticals can be very picky about the surface they are used on, and sometimes have a tendency to "drift" a little. That makes drafting a very frustrating experience. So I just make sure to clean my little mouse ball regularly.

Out of all the mice I've used, I like the Microsoft ones the best.

What do optical mice use if not a laser?

I use a Microsoft Intellimouse optical, it is so much less hassle than having to clean a ball. I agree the optical is not as acurate and does drift a little once in a while. For what I need to do its ok, and not a problem. I,ll be sticking with this one for a while yet. The other neat feature is that in a low light you can have fun getting the cat to chase the mouse light across the floor  .

They use a LED (Light Emitting Diode) and a camera.

Avoid red surfaces. My experience is that neither optical or laser like to have red surfaces.

Useful tip of the dayt:

It's just like if you've got a red laser gun and shoot someone with a red shirt, it won't cut them in half like normal.

Heh Heh Heh. Very funny. BTW we need a smiley for the sarcastic person.
Had a friend who took at wet shirt on during a waterfight.
He said if already had a wet shirt he wouldn't feel the water so much AND no one would bother throwing a bucket of water on him.
Boy he was sooo wrong.

I use the wired, rolling ball Boomslang 2000 mouse by Razer.

http://www.razerzone.com/

It's pretty old by now, but I like the 2000 DPI resolution and all the buttons. No problems with it, ever. People get freaked out if they use my computer, because the mouse is so sensitive, but after using it for a while, they want one. It's great for FPS.

Hey Ravage, remember you are the one that got me onto the Logitech MX500... You suggested the wireless one by the different number, but I went wired because I feared I would not recharge often enough.

So what does this MX1000 do different?

At the time, MX500 was the mouse to get..... that was then, this is now.

The MX1000 is to optical mice, what optical mice are to mechanical mice. The precision is insane, can literally move 1 pixel if your hand is steady enough.

Aside from that, it has an integrated lithium ion battery, that lasts twice as long, if not more than the standard rechargeable batteries from the MX500. this mouse has an off switch which is pretty cool when you get down to conservation of power, and in addition to that it shuts down when you leave it for 5-10 seconds. (never really paid attention cause its so quick)

I know the 500 shuts down as well, but you have to wait several seconds for it to come back. the laser mouse comes back up instantly.

It has a "Side scrolling" feature, in addition to all the buttons the 500 has. This feature lets you scroll large pictures, or websites, (or whatever) left and right, by tilting the mousewheel to the left or right.

Anyway... Vastly superrior to any other type of mouse on the market. Thats my opinion, and if you don't agree... you're wrong. 8)

Ravage, what is the actual DPI resolutin on the MX1000?

At this site they say the resolution is 800 dpi, which is measly to the 2000 dpi of my boomslang.

The numbers don't lie 8)

Uh-oh, I might be involving myself in a typical gamers mudslinging contest here. "My mouse is better than yours!" "Oh yeah, well it's al wasted, cuz ur mousepad sucks donkey ...."

LOL... well, my laziness has taken over, and I plugged my wired mouse back in. :)

I will eventually go the store and buy some new batteries and see how long the optical will last with those. But that requires effort as well as brain power to remember to grab the batteries.

I just read a review of the MX1000 where they said 1600 dpi, don't take my word for it though.

I say screw mice.. get an Optical Trackball for your main hand and a Belkin Nostromo n50 or n55 gamepad for your secondary.. I can do things with my hands that take others days in mere minutes...

Tomatoh, I have a Nostromo n52 for my alt hand. I used it a whole lot in SWG, but I have yet to put it to use in WoW. I would love to hear how you are using it in WoW. Maybe your usage will spark my n52 creativity.
