Post subject:  Mobo Install Problem
Hey guys... need some help from you techy types.

I got this new motherboard from dbakke here, and I'm tryin' to get it installed right.

I ran into a couple snags though. First, the smallish P7 power wire doesn't reach to the only connector where it looks like it'd fit onto on the new board. The old board had two such connectors in 2 different locations. The one it was plugged into on the old board is non-existant on the new one, and the only one there is on the new board is out of reach of the wire. Does this P7 wire need connecting, and if so, does it need connected to the one connector that's out of reach, and if so how?

Second.. The thin wires going from the board to the LED lights on the case as well as the PWR reset button doesn't fit right. It's a different sized connector. Is there an adapter for that? Any tips there or am I going to have to buy a new case?

Talon, folks may need some more specifics on the pin counts from the mobo to the connectors, etc.

ok.. well the pins in question can barely be seen on the pic of the board provided by dbakke there... They're in the far left bottom corner, 2 different pin sets, one of 9 pins (the verticle ones in the pic) and the one with 7 pins at a right angle to that. they're really small, and you can't see them in the pic. They look like tiny black rectangles in the corner.

So anyway, the connector running from my case is a 14 pin connector. But the weird thing is, the old motherboard's pins didn't match up either, it had like 16 pins and the connector sat with 2 pins exposed.

Somebody shed some light on what the hell this is all about??? :P

Is it a single solid 14 pin connector? Those things are normally borken up into individual connectors of 2 or 4 pins etc for each function (power switch, rest, leds etc).

Unless you break it up, you'd have to get some individual extensions I'd say.

Yeah.. it's a solid 14 pin connector. You're sayin' I gotta break that up?

There's only like 7 wires going into the connector, and one of them is the black ground wire.

Well,
  • You plug one end of one jump lead to its nose.
  • One end of the other jump lead to its tail.
  • Plug the other to ends to a nice decent power plant.
  • Stand well back and watch the fireworks!!

where i think obo was going is that you may need to find out what the layout of your 14 pin connector is (i.e. pin 1 and 2 is reset, pin 3 and 4 is LED, etc...) then get 2 and 3 pin male / female adapters to connect into your 14 pin "thing" to then subsequently attach to the mobo...

at least thats my guess. Alternatively, you may see if your local best buy has a geeks on call service that will switch out that 14 pin connector with new connectors that'll go right into the motherboard, or like you mentioned earlier...you may just need to shell out for a new case.

At the least, you can buy a seperate power switch. You don't really need to other stuff to get it running. Sure I'm even running a machine here that doesn't even have a case. :)

Uh Uh. Tried that. No firework sorry. But a good roasted pirce of meat. Taste good! j/k

Acctually I tried on a sur prikles (correct spell?) and they are fried fine.

But it would be good if you came with the name and numbers for the board.
