I have a rule that I will not comment on Answers without a Rationale.

However for your first guess I will break my rule and say your answer is incorrect.

I'm constructing a second clue. Let me know when you guys think you are ready for it.

Incorrect. I like your premise though! I too should be bound for the starry skies!

Incorrect. Interesting theory!

As a partial hint I will say that I beleive this is a difficult problem. The answer will not be as straightforward as the guesses so far.

Ok this may be a bit early, but I've decided to give my next clue.

My good friend Jacques said there is a prime suspect

As always I need an answer and a rationale.

Happy Hunting!

That makes me think it have something to do with Hadamard. But I don't know where the first one comes into that, unless the answer is infinity!

I have to confess, somewhat shamefully after reading a random article on Hadamard, that I did not recall hearing of him before you mentioned his name.

I am happy however that someone is starting to really think about this!! I will say however that it will not require a degree in mathematics to solve this riddle.

The use of the word "prime" in the second clue suggests a prime number.

The first clue, being "re: Astronauts IQ" suggests it's not actually the IQ of an astronaut but related to it. Possibly the time taken to complete and Astronaut's IQ test.

So it's a prime number relating to astronaut's IQ.

I didn't quite say that! There are other clues in the clues I've given. I have another clue ready to go when appropriate.

EDIT: I'm guessing this is harder than I intended, so let me guide you guys a bit.

1. The initial clue is enought to SOLVE the riddle, not just guess at a number.
2. The clues are not straightforward, you have to think laterally about these clues. Sometimes clues have more than one hint in them as well.
3. I received an illustrated copy of The Da Vinci Code for my recent birthday, and while it's not a stellar book, it was entertaining and inspired me to try my hand at a riddle.

7?

The number of letters in the name Jacques (and it's prime)?

How does that link with the first clue? You guys are doing well, but all the clues connect on at least 2 levels to corroborate the answer.

I'm guess the answer is 1 as it is the only value represented that actually has a numerical quantifier.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what you are getting at here.

Well, I suppose I'll give the 3rd clue:

Jean said he was mixed up, he could not be an astronaut

So, to summarize:

Clue 1: Re: Astronaut IQ
Clue 2: My good friend Jacques said there is a prime suspect
Clue 3: Jean said he was mixed up, he could not be an astronaut

and remember my pseudo-clues:

So while you could have solved the riddle just with the first clue, and some leaps of logic, with the three clues you should have every indicator you need to direct you to the solution.

I think you are assuming context, but either way you seem to be having a great time with it. But, I'm afraid I'm either not good at these or unfamiliar in the type of riddle you are proposing.

Don't get frustrated if we don't figure it out, only half of us are from Mensa. it might just be that canadian thing :P

Hmmm. Well, Saint Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of knowledge, might be involved because you mentioned Da Vinci Code...

Code:
If you mix up all the letters in:

RE ASTRONAUT IQ

you get:

AQUINAS RETORT

but also:

QUITE SO ERRANT
REASON QUIT ART
NEAT IRAQ TOURS

Or, my favorites:

IRAQ ANUS TORTE
ANTERIOR SQUAT

Confusing, because I'm not sure if Jacque and Jean are supposed to be common French names (because they're very uncommon in the US), or are hints in themselves. Jacques Clustow(sp?) was an explorer, like most astronauts. Mixed up indicated that some words might be anagrams, "suspect" indicates that there's a person as an answer... not a number... but the original question asks what number you're thinking of

. Jean-Jacques Favier is a German-born French astronaut that flew on one mission (STS 78 in 1996, but neither of those numbers are prime). But, there's not enough info in the first clue to point to that...
There's another French astronaut named Chretien Jean-Loup Jacques Marie that flew three missions. But, there's also someone named Jean-Jacques Velasco that wrote a book on UFOs... And finally, Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said "Quit thy childhood, my friend, and wake up!" (a quote I've always hated)

... so, in conclusion, I'd need another hint

Wow!!! You are so close to figuring this out!!! I will say a good chunk of your deductions are correct. (Therefore some are wrong or not applicable) I'll have to think about offering another clue. (Frankly this note is as much a clue as anything else.) You are missing just one major twist in the solution, as well as a couple of corroborating points!

So, the answer has something to do with Iraqi Anus Torte?

When I first saw it I was playing around with anagrams, but the most I got out of it was “Square” or “Question” where the rest didn’t seem to be useful.
I thought Square was on the right track if looking for a number. :?

If it’s a squared number and a prime, then the answer is one. :)

Never read to Da Vinci Code. :P

I suggest 183 as the answer, based on clue #1 alone.

When I look at the other clues my thinking doesn't necessarily make much sense so this might be far off. Tell me if I'm right or wrong in a PM and you can have my explanation.

I don't know why I'm even trying here, I just know I'm going to feel stupid when I'm proven wrong :D

Well I haven't got another clue, at least not yet. Frankly you guys are so close I'm not really sure you need another clue.

You've got the flint and the tinder, you just need to combine them!

TAN TRIO SQUARE
tan(3) ^2 = 0.1425 ^ 2 = 0.0203?

ONE QUART AS TRI
1/4 * 3 = .75?

SQUARE AT INTRO?

TRI NOTA SQUARE
Damn that NOTA, taking all the glory!

NOR A SQUARE TIT?
Maybe a round one?

A RAT SQUIRT ONE
Nasty buggers

STAR IN EQUATOR?
http://cargobay.starwars.com/webapps/ca ... tail/15822

But, if you're not going to use all the letters, you get math words like:
SATURATION
QUOTIENTS
QUANTISER
EQUATIONS
ITERATORS
QUINTETS
SQUARE
QUART
TEN

And interesting non-math words like:
RESTAURANT
SENORITA
SQUIRTER
QUESTION
TROUTIER
URINATES
SAURIAN
TROUSER
TORTURE
SNORTER
QUEST
STAR

Ummm... any of that mean anything to anyone?

Ok, I'm not sure how yet to give another clue without practically giving it away. Is anyone interested in working on this some more, or are you guys ready for the solution?

Let me guess, the answer is so obvious, we'll kick ourselves when you tell us?

I wouldn't go as far as to say it is "so obvious". However from my position the clues definately point the way to the answer, as well as supporting it in different ways.

I'm guessing the reaction will be, "yeah I see how you got there, but I was unlikely to think of it that way". Except for Flyoc, who will be shaking his head in disbelief he didn't get it.

Anyone interested in determining the relevance of all the clues? If not I'll just explain them all.

I give up. Why is it 43?
