F-117 and 2 SR-71 though the SR-71's do appear to be display items and not in service... |

The photo restrictions the article talks about are true. I once audited a job at Warner Robins Air Force base in Georgia. It was very cool; they took me on a tour to see a wing of B1 bombers stationed there. First thing I said was “they don’t park these bombers in a hanger?" It had looked like the air force cut a section out of the woods, paved the ground, then parked several B1 bombers there. There these giant plains sat in the elements under the stars, positioned for action in a moments notice. We weren’t allowed to take photos of the planes.... and boy did I want to. The way they were arranged for action looked awesome and would have made great pictures. The lancer was our first bomber to experiment with continuous curvature... Which eventually led to the stealth technology used in the B2 and the F22. We were allowed to take pictures of them when they were flying, but not while they were on the ground. I have a pic around here somewhere of one just after takeoff… it is not great but I will see if I can find it. In the mean time here are some B1 lancer pictures. http://www.xp-office.de/BILDER/030327-F-3488S-023.jpg http://www.xp-office.de/B1/b.1.9.jpg http://www.xp-office.de/B1/b1.7.jpg |

Um... B-2s aren't classified or denied to exist, so there's no problem in one showing up in a picture. They even have B-2s that do flybys at Air Shows (like the one at Andrews Air Force Base every year). They're cool planes -- my sister is an AF Pilot, and her first base was a B-2 base (though, she just made coffee for the pilots, not fly the B-2s). There are tons of satellite photos of B-2s and other cool planes as you walk through the hallways of the Pentagon (which you can see if you go on the free tours). Now, the JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) is a damn cool plane. They don't get much cooler than that. |

I read the original German article that link thingie is based on and apparently the problem is that no one is supposed to know where exactly those things are stationed. With that information an enemy could launch targeted strikes against the air bases to disable the B-2 bombers. That is also the reason why Cyrus was not allowed to photograph them on the ground, with (possibly) identifiable landmarks behind them, only in flight with the sky as background. Edward |

Actually, the Air Force base that is the home of the B2 Bomber fleet is well known, and has that fact labelled on it's public home page. ![]() |

Yeah but do they have a nice handy map showing which hangers they are stored in and which buildings you have to sneak past to get to it? ![]() Or where the nearest fence is so that you can set up your trebuchet outside to get pot shots at it? ![]() |
