This is for Business use. Do you guys know of some good/reasonable data modeling software available for purchase? Back in the day, I used a suite of products from Rational Rose, ERWin, or Power Designer. While each of them was a solid product it might be a little bit of overkill for my current need. Basically I want to be able to design database tables (at a minimum of Physical Data Model, though I would prefer the Conceptual data model as well). Be able to generate scripts to drop/add the tables, views, triggers, Foreign Keys... with perhaps some options for loading a base set of data (though I could manage that with scripts myself). all the above mentiuoned products had plenty of functionality to generated code and that won't necessarily be needed for my future efforts. If you have Visio, you can do a bunch with that (though, I think you need the Visio Enterprise Architect version to have it auto build your .NET code structures for you). System Architect is also nice, and cheap (and, I think has a free one month demo). Do you just want to design/work with tables, or do the entire Object Oriented system design, code generation thing as well? If it's just the DB stuff, I'll ask one of my DB guys what they use. |

If it's just the DB stuff, I'll ask one of my DB guys what they use. The code generation can be left off; just the DB stuff. The applications I will deisnging will be smalll in nature and highly customized. Those code generation utilities work best for simple, non-customized data sets. |

Microsoft Access may suit your needs for what you're talking about... it's very intuitive and is a good tool for design and VBA is a good language to use for small scale, simple database applications. I use SQL Server to do all that stuff at my job, but it's not free. If you can get a hold of it though, Enterprise Manager and the Query Analyzer are great tools... |

I used SPSS, don't know who made the program but I can find out tomorrow. I was working at the greenlandic statistics at the time. When I got the info I'll let you know. |

Don't get me started on Access...please don't As for Enterprise manage/Query Analyzer...they are the targets of the system I am requesting and not a tool to help generate that information. I'll check out the others, but if you can get your guys to forward that infromation to me yak, I would greatly appreciate it. Azz, what does SPSS stand for? |

Dunno. Had quite a busy day today so I didn't find out. But I'll call them tommorow to make an appointment. Inkow it is a database program and quite easy to use. But when you look into it and find more of it's functions it get very complicated. |

Sorry for the delay... my DBAs say to use Business Object Designer, ver 11. I can send you the tech docs on it if needed. |

Heh. I should have known. The hompage for the program I talked about was just http://www.spss.com, though I can remember which program I used. They have alot and some demo's of them. You need to registre before rreading about the programs though. Hope it helps. |

I'll ask if they have any smaller recommendations... you can always go to eMule or something and get Visio System Architect... |

Does it cost anything? Guess you have to go through the sign-up before you get to see how much it may cost? |
