I am thinking about getting a digital voice recorder so I can playback my class lectures. I believe I learn much better by listening. It may have to do with my horrible penmanship, but either way I think I would do better if I could replay my lectures and record/replay my study guides. I think it would be great to be able to listen to my study guides over and over again until it is drilled into my head like a bad song. Have any of you guys used digital voice recorders? Got any good reviews? |

How 'bout a digital camera and place it next to you at the classes? Zoom it at the blackboard so you can the details. I did it once with a friends camera at history class. Had a blast and I got a A+ at the subject, at the oral exsam. The aftermatch of WW2 at Greenland. Spanning from 1948 to 1979. Mostly on the political situation, but also the society and history of Greenland during that time. |

I'm a visual learner myself so I've never bothered. I don't remember anything I hear. I do remember reading that iPods have an acessory you can buy that records audio on it. Maybe you should look into that. |

I don’t think a camera will work for me. My backpack is loaded down as it is with 2 monster sized law books, 1 oversized physics book and my binder. I choose to not bring my other books to school just to lighten my load. I can barely make it to class before the lecture starts therefore I wont have time to set up video equipment. Secondly I don’t want to have to jump through the hoops of getting permission to film my classes. Some of these guys have been known to not want to be audio recorded, let alone video recorded. I will be doing a commando operation. i.e. what they don’t know wont hurt them. I have read that the iPod add-on is only ok for dictation, and not very good at catching lectures. These are the two I am looking at now. The price is pretty high, but I rather buy something that works than go cheap and own something that wont do the job.
What would really be sweet is a good laptop, and somehow record from the channel their wireless microphone is transmitting on. But I am graduating too soon to justify that cost. |

Well, I tried that some years ago, and it plainly didn't work. Why? The machine doesn't focus on the teacher like you do. It registers everything, and half of what you will hear will be your neighbor scribbling on paper, the guy two rows behind coughing like mad, and, occasionnally, the teacher's voice. You'll get the voice AND all the ambiant noises, and it will make deciphering the recording so painful you'll wish you'd have listened for real. 
Now, maybe technology is better, at my times it was plain old tape. Sheesh, I sound old now.

Ok, I bought the Memory Stick® Pro™ Duo Digital Voice Recorder ICD-MX20. The first time I was delivered to my house the box was EMPTY. No directions, no software CD, no USB cable... just an empty box. Boy was I pissed. But Amazon got right on it and had a replacement at my house in 2 additional days. This thing is great. It has stereo and directional mic, the directional is great for catching the professor. The voice up feature is great for making the professor stand out above the other noise. Also my classes are pretty quiet so I haven’t had any problems catching the professor. This week I had 4 huge tests. Needless to say I had to focus on some and let the others suffer. Luckily this recorder came in time for me to make stuffy guides of the classes I had put off. Basically I just recorded myself reading the study guide I created. Then when playing it back I used the divide feature to split the file to many parts, one for each major subject. Now I can quickly track forward or back to hear what ever subject I want to hear. Now I play the thing every spare minute I have… in the car, chilling at the house, waiting for class. Even though I have only had a few hours to study some classes, spanning +10 chapters, I almost have all the major points memorized. It is like hearing a bad song on the radio… if they play it enough you learn the lyrics. |

if you can okay it with the teacher just drop the recorder on his/hers desk to record...less ambient noises more teacher |
