Scroll down in this thread for the AFL 2005 "Home Post"

Also, this league is open to any Avian. Don't be shy if youre a fantasy football newbie, we are always willing to help out a fellow Avian.

----------------------------------

Its that time of year again, the smell of freshly cut grass and even fresher contracts fill the air. The OTAs are over and the training camps open in a week, its time for some football!

Last year the Avian Football League (AFL) had a great turnout, with 16 teams all going for the big prize and I think everyone had a good time, I know I did ;)

I just want to express some opinions and get some discussion going, or at least get the rivalries rekindled. Last year I felt I dictated (as the Commish) what was going to happen without getting feedback or opinions from yall. I just want to make sure we start the season off right and make everyone happy. So here goes the ramble (you know you love it)

I think we are all agreed that it is too early to actually start the league. The last 2 years (I don't know about the 2002 season, I didn't care about FF, imagine that) we've created the league on Yahoo! Sports in early-to-mid August with the draft in late August or very early September. I think this works best, as people are less likely to join and then forget about their team the rest of the 4 month long season, although there are always 1 or 2 teams (people) that drop off the face of the earth during the course of the season.

One thing I liked last season was the league size. 16 teams is great imo. It gives just enough of a gamble to who you choose to play without it being too easy. I feel like I actually have to think about who I'm going to play in my 3rd WR slot and stuff like that. I think we should shoot for 16 teams this season, but we cant really control that, the people who play are the people who play, also the more the merrier.

Now about the Commish. It is my understanding that part of the tradition is that every year there is a new Commish. I would like to see this tradition to continue so I will not elect myself to the spot. However, I feel I did a great job last year and would be honored if yall wanted me to do it again, but I would much rather pass the "fun" of being Commish to someone else since I know I will have fun this season weither I have the position or not. Yalls call really.

Rule changes. I know last year the hot topic at the end of the season (and rightly so) was the 3 week long playoffs and a Week 17 Superbowl. This year we must push the Superbowl back a week to #16. This will allow for 8 teams to make the playoffs and the last 2 teams to play the week before all the stars sit the bench. This is a given. What other changes would yall like to see?

I have checked out Yahoo! this year and they have made some great additions to the free leagues. One major addition that will help out the AFL is a Trading Block screen, where you can put players you own up for trade (negotiations really) and see what other teams have to offer. You can also put your needs, as far as the need for more carries or receptions, alot of depth. I am really excited about this addition, it will help get the trade channels flowing, I think we only had 1 or 2 trades last year. There are also things like a little notepad where you can make personal notes and in depth projected stats for every player. The graphics have been overhauled and look much more modern and smooth, not a big deal but more pleasant to look at.

Just as a refresher here is the link for the 2004 season thread. There are alot of memories I had just reading through and if you are feeling less than enthusiastic about the upcoming season just take a read and relive the rivalries. I know I am marking the sunday Talon and I play with a big red marker, the Section Six Showdown! :)

Ok I'm done with my ramble, lets get a discussion going or at least make a reply if you are going to play this year. If you are feeling really really advantageous post what a good draft time would be, but that's really above and beyond :)

Oh yeah, the Criticals will be back to defend their title 8)

The Dragons are definitely going to try and take that title back from the Crits after last years rather embarrassing defeat

As for Commish if you like doing it go for it you know how the settings work and did a great job last year.

One thing we discussed last year was having a Team D, and a single defensive player. Pro's/Cons? is this still possible? just another intresting thought

Here is what I know about single defense player for Yahoo!
there are 3 options.
a Defensive Player (D) spot that can have any Defensive player fill it.
a Defensive Back (DB) for DBs only
a Defensive Lineman (DL) spot, im not sure if this includes linebackers or not.

What happens if we add a spot we get 1 more draft round and 1 more roster spot. It seems pretty straight forward but I dont have a strong feeling about this one way or another.

Glad to hear it Arindel, I still feel bad about the difficulties we had getting you in the league last year.

Romsuiag's Rancors will be back again of course.

My preference for FF leagues is the more players the better. Makes it more interesting.

The Hawkbats will be on the prowl again this year! We'll be gunnin' for the Crits as usual. :P

I'm in again.

I have a couple thoughts on the topic of including defensive players in addition to whole team D. In my experience with fantasy football leagues that I have run and participated in, I have never included defensive players. I'm all for the idea of it, though, as I think it will add an interesting dynamic. My concern is point production from DBs and DLs. There very well could be a huge gap in the amount of consitant point production from the two positions simply due to their nature, much like we see from comparing WRs to RBs or WRs to QBs. WRs in general produce far fewer points than RBs or QBs, simply because of the way the game is played and their role in the offense. Because of this, I have never liked the inclusion of a RB/WR slot, which is available. Along this same line of thought, I would prefer not to have a generic D slot, but rather a DL and a DB slot. This will further increase the roster size, spice up the draft, and can make for more interesting trades and viable free agent pickups.

Moving the post-season up is good too. :)

good deal, we got 8 ppl/teams so far. Seems like all the regualrs are back, glad to see that. I think im gonna give it another week and start the league like august 1st or around then. does that sound ok for everyone?

in the mean time should we have a vote or something for the defensive player positions? I really could go either way. I can see the pros and cons of each side equally.

since none of the regulars have said they want to be commish, im just gonna go ahead and take the position again this year. I know Cetera said he wanted to do it last year.

more people will join and be interested when we atually have a league going so im not worried about only having 8 atm.

Dragons -Yay on defensive positions one DL one DB

reason that it simply adds variety and gives us all something new to play with!

The year I tried to play that with you I was pretty much beaten by everybody, not knowing american-the-football-played-with-hands () players and not having access to information about whom is good or not makes it pretty difficult to make something else than random choices.

Just got back from vacation so I missed the start of the thread. I'd very much like to participate this year! I have always been a big college football fan, but, past couple of years I've been watching and enjoying NFL a bit more. Maybe cause the falcons actually have a decent owner now .. I'm not sure, but, I even went to my first two NFL games ever last year  I'm in this year!

glad to hear it nasiobo. just keep checking this thread, we should be starting the league soonish, like in a week i think. IMO, playing FF makes every NFL game interesting, so if you already enjoy watching the games (and who here doesnt? :D ) it makes it just the much entertaining.

sluggy, if you want to play and have fun you can and will. I know its difficult to play when alot of it is watching players and teams but with a multitude of websites you can keep track of every player. I think the NFL site even has webcasts of some games.

just letting you know if you want to play we can give you the tools to have fun. But I agree with you, if the sides were switched, I know I would have a difficult time keeping up with euro football. So, like everyone here, I feel if you want to play we will make it happen and make sure you have fun, thats why we all are here.

Got some bad news guys about the draft time. I was tooling around and looking at the available draft times and there are no spaces available from now until after the start of the season

so what im going to do is make the league and try and get the best spot I can during late August or early Sept. I didnt realize before this we would have to compete for a weekend draft position.

If you have any ideas on what your sccedule is going to be like in a month let me know, this is a case where the early bird gets the worm. I hate to rush things but I dont think anyone would be happy with a 6am on a Wednesday draft time. I will post the offical header post, like the one we had last year, in a few hours. Until then.

Arindel are you having problems getting signed up or are you helping Nasiobo?

We are not a PLUS league, just a regualr one.

http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/register/createjoin

click that link, then click the blue "Join Existing Custom or Public League", then Custom League, then enter the ID and password

That worked, but it might have been that I had not signed in to my Yahoo account for some time.

That link above took me to a different place than before. /shrug

Arindel's Airmen are back!

9 teams so far, I was able to coax lakini and Davni back :D

Right now we have 12 teams that have either signed up or said they will join, I think thats way more than we had last year at this time. We are looking for 2 or 4 more people to join the league so if you know any Avians who might be interested bug em or send them to me and Ill get them setup. As alwasy the more the merrier, up to 20, but I think the best number is 14 or 16, we can not have an odd number of teams, Yahoo! prevents it.

Just to make sure everyone knows the new things this year: we have 2 added starting spots and 1 extra bench spot. Everyone will start 1 DL and 1 DB.

Scoring has been posted in the "Home Post" above. Let me know if you have any problems but it is the scoring system we used last year.

Draft Time and Date!!!!
right now is August 30th at 4:45pm EDT. I know this may not work for most people but the problem is out of my hands. the options are very, very limited. There are no open slots on the weekends and no spots after 4:45pm EDT. It sucks, I know. However, if you let me know when you can and cannot make it, we can work something out. DF and Mole have both told me what their situation is and I have changed the time for them.

Contact me on AIM or MSN if you want to chat about anything. Glad to see everyone is excited as me about the 2005 season.

You should have the live draft on the weekend or during non-working hours. And that could get rough for people on the East Coast (or in Europe).

EDIT: reread that the open times is slim pickinks....we'll have to make sure or all decide to go with the draft picker (and you can edit your choices).

Any time and any day between 8/20 - 9/3 works for me.

That's vacation time for me before school starts, however I do apologize if I show up intoxicated to the draft.

Would it be possible to have the live draft without the Yahoo program and then update the program with the results? This might get us more flexibility in planning a live draft event and we could probably use a TS server to do the communication?

there is a draft type called "offline draft" which will allow you to input your own rosters, i guess, ive never tried it. But offline draft is really meant for people who actually meet face-to-face to draft. But about doing the draft over TS I dont like it either. I can see too many things going wrong, like someone getting disconnected during the draft or a misunderstandment about a pick. I just think doing an offline draft creates more problems than it solves.

I think we should just shoot for the best live draft time that pleases most people, what we do every year. I guess next year we should be making the league really early, like in June or July to make sure we get a good spot, but that doesnt help us this year.

looking through the available times again just to make sure they dont reopen some slots

what do yall think about Aug 23 at 5:45pm edt? does the 1 hour help or hurt anyone? Im not going to change it to this date or time just trying to find something that works for most people.

Cetrea, I know you said you were good for the current draft time, is this suggestion worse for you?

DF, does the one hour make it easier for you to get home from work in time?

Arindel, does this work better for you? I assume you have a conflict with the current draft time.

Nasi, Mole, Wiegraf, lakini, davni: does this time work better for you or the current one?

also, does anyone know what happened to Marrok, Rom and Talon?

just to let yall know what my situation is: i go back to school on the 29th of august, this is new cause I thought I was going back much earlier, like the 21 of aug but they told me I have a week more of vacation :P but im not sure if i will have commitments the night after i get back to school, so im just covering my bases. let me know what you think.

I like the 5:45 time MUCH better. this means I don't have to make up some excuse to get off work now, which, normally I would not mind, but, I've been off about 1/2 of the summer already :)

I should be good with pretty much any time after 3pm EDT. I'm off work at that point, and I live less than 3 blocks from work, so I can get home in a hurry. Whatever works for everyone else should be good. I may even be able to draft at work, but I'd prefer not to have to try if at all possible.

Yahoo is really pissing me off. I look at everyones comments and think, "alright good to go, lets change the draft time", I talk to Mole, he says hes fine with it also and then it isnt avalible anymore

I hate moving the draft time around but I feel I need to since everyone likes the 5:45 time better. Im going to move the draft to Aug, 18th at 5:15 edt. I know this is a little early and 30min too early, sorry. I am learning a leassion about this though, act fast. As soon as something should be done, do it.

let me know if this doesnt work for anyone and we will try another time. welcome Rom to the 2005 season. Also, we are looking for 2 or 4 more players. If you have any people in-game that would like to join us please tell them how to join or send them to me. I have a feeling that some members dont realize that we are open to other people...
