Post subject: | RAM help |
I currently have a P2.4, 1GB RAM system but was thinking about boosting the RAM up to 2GB (see some decent prices for 512MB chips in local flyers). My current RAM is PC1066 RDRAM. Is this good? How does it compare to SDRAM? Would I have to buy 1066 RD on my next 1GB should I decide to buy some? Just want some info before I go splurge. |

a gig of RD will be extremely expensive. no you cannot mix them. and i could almost guarantee you will not see a difference in your performance with more than a gb of RAM. in comparison, RD is far superior to SD. SD=PC133 at max. PC1066 is...well you see the difference. it would probably be cheaper to buy a new mobo, proc and 1gb of DDR than to buy a GB of ANY RD RAM. |

Seeing a difference depends on the games you are playing I think. I definitely noticed a difference when I upgraded playing MMO's like EQ2 / SWG. But on other games I didn't notice a difference. |

I have a gig for Corsair Duel Channel ram. I noticed a sizable difference in MMOs and heavy games like Doom III but I doubt I would physically notice the difference from 1 gig to 2 gigs. |

I have two systems running the game at the moment. One with RDRAM and one with SDRAM. When they had the same amount of RAM I noticed a HUGE difference between machines. Rambus just kicks butt. Now that I have 1 gig I really love it. But it was WAY to expensive. I'm not 100% sure it would be worth it, especially since the optimum RAM for SWG is 1.3 gig, which gives SWG the maximum usable RAM. |

The ads I saw has 512MB of RAM (didn't specify whether RD, SD, DDR, etc.) for $80 CDN, after rebates, which I thought was decent provided it was a good type. I wasn't gonna buy it just for SWG, I'm not that crazy, just to give any/everything a kick in the pants. |

^^^i guarantee its not RD for that cheap. here is the cheapest 512 stick: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820147302 and the most expensive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145150 btw...those are both only PC800. these are fom newegg(the only site anyone should buy parts from). they dont even sell 1GB sticks anymore. the cheaper sticks are Samsung and Geil. The acceptible stick is Corsair. and it's $310 US. so....as i said...for a GB of RDRAM, hell, even for 512 of it, you could buy a new mobo, proc, and DDR RAM. edit: if you are wondering why RD is so much more expensive than DDR, its because it wasnt cost effective to make so people stopped production. DDR is hella faster than RD ever was. and now it is a third of the price. |

Here's a longshot... Check if your mobo supports DDR. If it does, sell your RDRAM and buy 2 Gb of DDR ![]() |

I purchased PC400 RDRAM when I built my current PC, years ago. At the time, it was only $5 more expensive than the DDR, and more than twice as good. Now, with only 512MB of RAM, I really want to upgrade. But as it will cost me as much for RAM as a new processor, Mobo, and more RAM, I'll be building a different box instead. The RDRAM does kick ass, though. Those 512 MB of RDRAM has performed admirably for me, and I would put it up against all but the newest DDR RAM and expect it to outperform. It really is good stuff. Its just priced like it too. |

Well, my mobo doesn't support DDR RAM so I'm stuck with my 1GB of RD. Still nothing to sneeze at by any means. |
