Infrared is pretty simple, but most desktops don't have that
Bluetooth if you have it installed on both.
Easiest may be just getting an external HD like you suggest and transferring that way.

Is there a quick and easy way to link 'em or would i be better off getting an external HD (which I saw considering before..) Need to dump a bunch of stuff from the home computer to my school computer as soon as i get it... |

think i might go with an external would be nice to have in anycase to move stuff around nother question looking at 2 computers atm..prebuilt dells... First one has less processor at 3ghz while second is 3.20...but the ram on the 2nd doesn't seem as good as the first set. So being the novice I am and the fact I haven't kept current with this stuff since my last purchase... (and yea I know this is my school computer...but it doesn't make much sense to buy a computer thats worse then my home computer...) 9100 200mhz will not make a difference in proc speed, whereas it will in RAM speed. |

/agree with evergamer edit: I wanted to add a bit more context. From what I can gather most games out today don't need much more than 2GHZ in terms of processor speed. Almost all productivity apps (i.e. Word, Excel, etc) don't need more either unless you are doing some serious, non typical, functions. Most manufacturers kept on churning down the GHZ path to keep their price points up. Its kind of funny when you all the configurators on these sites that charge 500-800 bucks to go from like 3.0 Ghz to 3.4 or 6. That money is so much better spent on more and faster RAM,video cards from a gaming perspective., faster HD's, and faster bus speeds on your mobo. |

The easiest way to connect two PCs is with a ethernet crossover cable. Make sure the IP subnets match, like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2. share the drives and then map them in explorer. Make sure there is nothing liek ZoneAlarm getting in the way. |

I have a 3 of my PCs networked together using a router and cat5 cables. All PCs are equipped with 100MB/s network cards, so transferring files is very fast. If you are running windows XP setting up the network is a breeze. You really don’t need the router unless you want all PCs to operate independently all the time. For my money, there is nothing faster or easer than this setup. /edit, yeah what Obo said!

Not only is this the easiest, it's also the Cheapest and Fastest way to make this transfer. Important note: Once you get the crossover cable make sure you clearly mark that cable as a crossover. Later on, when you go through your stuff looking for a Cat-5 cable, it is too easy to grab that one on accident, and when your connection doesn't work you'll be scratching your head trying to figure out why.

Since you are going back to school though and potentially using lab pc's etc...you may want to consider an external drive or flash drive to avoid lugging your laptop all over the place. But for a one time transfer of 10GB of the files...cross over looks like its cheaper...hadn't thought of that. Prices have come down and you can get 40 GB external drives for less than a 100 bucks if you go that route. |

Agree, use a crossover cable. It you're cheap/creative, you can easily make one yourself, you just have to change one wire in the cable. Takes 10 minutes with a pair of clippers, google for how to do it. I love my DVD-burner. $100 and $20 for 200 gigs worth of DVDs... |

The final question is video card...I would like to get a 6800 but price is kinda high atm... this is the other one Dell suggests.
