Post subject:  novels/authors for any genre you feel like!
At a general request from Master Ed in the fantasy authors thread, this thread is for recommending books that are neither Sci-Fi nor Fantasy.

Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander series. They're very hard going, but entertaining if you can get into them.

Anything by Haruki Murakami. Period.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is the best book you've never read, I recommend it to anyone who likes imaginative, intricate, and surreal writing. It's long so you may want to start with one of his smaller novels like Sputnik Sweetheart or A Wild Sheep Chase to see if you enjoy his style.

Murakami is a very popular Japanese writer who's lived in the US for a great part of his life. He's my favorite author and incredibly talented. If you read one of his books, you will read them all.

I'm reading Memoirs of a Geisha at the moment as well and am enjoying it greatly.

I finally get to recommend Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle: Quicksilver, The Confusion and The System of the World. Swashbuckling historical romance with a deep undercurrent of enlightenment, economics, cryptography and the birth of modern science. Highly recommended to anyone who likes their books thought-provoking.

And while I am at iz, I recommend his Cryptonomicon as well. Cryptography both historical and contemporary is but one of themes of this book that includes a full algorithm of how to encrypt messages using a deck of cards, while still being a good read.

Just finished reading the kids The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling. Going to Treasure Island next.

For those w/ kids, here's some more of what I've liked reading to them.

The Little House on the Prairie series. Born and raised in Minnesota on the Wisconsin border so there's some historical interest as well.

Most of Roald Dahl books, except for the great glass elevator. Didn't like that one at all. Just saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory over the weekend. FANTASTIC!

The Series of Unfortunate Events books are very funny too.
