Hey guys :)

Since ye asked for an update... I'm 'in between' in terms of doing work like that of reviews and fan sites. I will be doing reviewing more in my upcoming job for a new network. Can't talk about that really though; when there's something to show you, I certainly will! :o

I've been playing WoW a bit, or a lot, depending on how much playing it required to be "addicted", I guess. But on Earthen Ring and Kargath. It's a chore to play on two servers, let alone 3, or I'd be on Dalaran also. :(

Still trying to break my ass into the games industry. Still to no avail, so it seems. :?

On a note some of you may be interested, I've been watching, and rewatching some of the presentations from the Game Developer Conference, via GDC-TV: http://www.pqhp.com/cmp/gdctv/ The two best, I think, are rightly from Will Wright and Peter Molyneux.

More later, when it's not 2am.

And now, I'll open the floor up for questions. 8)

Still the happy and optimistic person?

(valid question!)

At this very moment, I'm kicking my ass for going to bed at 4am when I aim for midnight. Stupid WoW. I'm gonna have to cancel it.

I don't suppose that counts as optimistic?

Having plans counts as optimistic.

Good to hear your latest update. And here I was thinking that you are trying to push the MMOG of your choice on us :)

Heheh. I actually just cancelled WoW. It's impossible to get shit done, honestly. I dunno what I'll be playing in the meantime. Probably nothing, MMORPG-wise.

Just have to apply to every single game company known to man, and that takes too much time and energy to be able to addictively play WoW.

At least you got a lot of choices in the games industry.

For a non-US citizen choices are pretty limited, as most major PC game developers are US-based.

Edward
tried with all major German ones

What are you trying to do in the game industry?

My friend Shaun just started working as a financial advisor and the Epic Games HQ is in his office building. He said one of the guys drives a black Lexus and it says "OWNAGE" on his license plate. :P

So you want us to name all of the game companies in the world?
To make a list for you to go through?

Well, I'm neither an artist, nor a programmer. I have a lot of fan site experience, and I'm rather well-versed in current game events, the history of the industry, and I've also been spending the last few months studying game design itself. Most game design positions however, are not entry-level (which isn't to say there aren't any). Though I do web sites and graphics, I'm by no means what a game company could call a "web designer", as I don't really keep up with any languages beyond HTML - but the skills I have would come in handy for a marketing position or design (drawing mock-ups and such).

So with that, I'm most qualified for entry-level things such as QA Testing and for MMORPGs, being a Game master, and any entry-level Design positions (including some level design, but more for RTS games rather than FPS). With my fan site experience, I could also get a job as an Online Community Rep (which can be found mostly for MMORPGs).

Then you have to factor in filters like respectable companies that make good games, that sort of thing...

The companies with open positions that I most qualify for, and most want are at Big Huge Games (Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends) and Sigil Games Online (Vanguard: Saga of Heroes); both of which have design-related positions. Blizzard Entertainment has their constant GM positions open, but that's on the other side of the country, and I don't know if I'd like to start entry-level at a company like Blizzard. Turbine, Inc. (Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online) has some testing positions open as well. Mythic Entertainment (DAoC) in Fairfax, VA is closer to home than any other (though BHG is also close) - they have open GM positions.

I'm not at home right now, so I don't have my big huge (ha ha) list of companies-to-apply-to right in front of me. I am regardless sort of limited to some genres, decent companies, positions open, and positions I'm qualified for. But if I were absolutely desparate, I would scrap the first two criteria there and go work for Electronic Arts - meanwhile, my brains would be leaking, and I would steadily lose any remaining shred of sanity I may have left.

In the meantime I've been looking for paid fan site work in addition to being a "games consultant" on a new (currently in development) search engine for video games. That's where that 'new fan site network' I mentioned before may come in.

Haha! Certainly something I'd expect from someone who works with Cliffy B.

I've seen that car! A plate like that'll stick in your brain.

For a while I’ve probably been just yet another ‘armchair developer’ (“they should have done this... they should have done that”), but ever since Yak started talking about game design topics I’ve started to think that I might actually be able to get off my arse and do something about it.
When I grow up I want to be a Ludologist! :)

Recently I’ve been reading a fair few books, watching webcasts, following the dev blogs etc., learning what it actually takes to develop these things, all the while hacking together bits of code and scribbling down my meandering thoughts on systems for my “Ultimate MMO”.
I think the only way I’d get anywhere is to actually make something to show off, but I’m teaching myself from scratch. I’m not just at the very bottom of the ladder; the ladder is sitting on top of me.

The problem with the MMO market is it is still relatively small and there are a good lot of experienced people floating around out there, so it’s hard to break in.
And of course I haven’t worked nine to five for over two years now, so the thought of the ‘W’ word makes me shudder. :)

I guess I’ll just have to wait for Yak to hire me :P.
Or win the lottery, hire a bunch of very talented people and say “here’s the money, here’s ‘The Vision’, go make my game.” :)

When the two of you decide who's hiring who, could one of you hire me too! :D
