Final semester

Man this last semester looks like fun... But I am a bit nervous that some classes will not live up to my expectations. Nothing sucks more than a good sounding class turning out bad.

    CM 4202 Construction Enterprise: In the first days of this class we will divide the class into 4 man groups. From then on we will simulate the creation and operation of a construction company. We will start by securing lawyers and forming a corporation. Then we will create a business plan and obtain financing. Then we will estimate a project, bid on a project, win a project, and negotiate a contract. Lastly we will simulate the operation of the project, process all paperwork and accounting functions to necessary to receive payment.

    To me, this will be a cool class if the instruction is as good as advertised. I am excited because I have handled all the operations aspects and accounts receivable/payable aspects of many real life projects... So those parts should be a refresher for me. But I am even more excited to experience the front end aspects like securing the bankers and lawyers and supplying all the things they will need. This is an area I have no experience with, and I am very excited to learn the details.

    ACCT 2102 Managerial Accounting II: Not looking forward to this one. I have done real life project side accounting, real managerial style accounting… and it is nothing like they crap they try to feed us in class. This will be my last accounting class, and if it was like any of the previous accounting classes, I am going to dislike it. I don’t like they way accountants think differently form engineers. I am more of an engineer, and I hate they way accountants try to do and talk math. They can take their 24 letter acronyms and stick them up their ass. Maybe this one will be different, I hope so, but it is my general opinion that accounting professors make their work more confusing they it needs to be.

    CM 3141 Highway Construction: I am excited about this class. Up until now I have been 90% sure I would go into industrial construction and 10% sure I would go residential. Industrial because it is more to my liking and I am more comfortable with it because of my industrial background. Residential because I want inside information for when I build my own house one day. I am not interested in commercial. I do find myself warming up to Heavy construction, which is home to Highway construction. Usually I find the thought of building roads unappealing… however the professional side of the business is not so bad. Then with the government approving such a large highway budget this summer, work will be plentiful for the next few years. This has opened my eyes even through I am not completely sold on a Highway career.

    MGT 4113 Small Business Management: This one is so much like Construction Enterprise that it isn’t even funny. We will form three to four man groups, form a company of our choosing, and work towards developing a real PhD quality business pan. This course is designed to provide us with a comprehensive insight into the theory and practice of starting and managing a small business. Some of the topics include the nature of small business, starting a small business, feasibility studies, accounting, financing, marketing, promotion, location analysis, and ethics. Basically it will combine all the College of Business classes into one big hands on project where we apply all the business practices from previous classes.

    I am excited about this class because Danyale and I would like to manage real-estate one day. I would love to learn how to start such a business and I hope I can convince my group into choosing such a plan. I think it would be great to have a professor help me with the groundwork for something I really intend on implementing one day.

    CM 3131 Industrial Estimating: I tried to get into this class last year. They would not allow me to be concurrently enrolled so I could not stay in it. This is a cool class, the Sr. Manager of Estimating for Turner Industries teaches this class. Turner is the largest private construction company in Louisiana, and is a major player all over the US. They do all the typical plant building stuff… but one of the cool, odd, things they do is position the space shuttle for NASA before launch and before transport. Harmony is the sister company who does all the crane work for the shuttle. Anyway my instructor will be their Sr. Manager of Estimating. It is always cool be taught by people who still work in the real word. Academia can sometimes loose sight of the real word.

    In this class we will be assigned a real invitation to bid a real petrochemical plant somewhere here along the gulf. It will be one that turner has already completed, and we will have to prepare estimate for the cost of the project. Groups will be competing to arrive at the cost estimate closest to the estimate that won the bid in the real world.

    Lastly one of the sweetest things is that the guy does not have normal office hours. You have to go see him at his turner offices. He assigns his employees to help us with anything we need. While at Turner we can use any of the tools available at the turner offices… his secretary’s assistant will even pull files and run copies for us.



So that is my final semester. It looks like its going to be a cool one, I just hope everything turns out to be as good as they advertise. I am already getting class files and website accounts emailed to me, so the instructors must be anxious to get the ball rolling. The beginning of the end starts Monday

Hmm, my final semester starts in two weeks. I do a thing called the MDDP which makes up about a third of the marks. MDDP stands for Multi-Disciplinary Design Project. We're told that it's specifically designed to give the student complete nevous breakdowns!

As for me, I start my MBA in Information Systems degree on Monday... i'm going part time so i can keep working... it'll take me 3 years... i've been out of school for 2 years, but i'm ready to go back.

Well speaking as a practicing professional accountant, still low in the ranks (ie not even manager yet), I think you hit the nail on the head and agree that the higher ups, including professors, make things way too damn complicated. I had to get thru 6-7 accounting classes in university and that was not the best of times.

In the work place, same thing. I just attended a 4 day training session and my god, some of the advanced topics covered seem like twisted monstrosities coming out of a Stephen King novel. :P

I think this is why I am looking for a career change now.

Hmmm...

I've just been offered a job to teach at John Hopkins University for people doing Masters classes at night... not sure if I'll be able to mesh that with my current job of travelling every week... though it sure sounds interesting.

problem is that I'd need to start in 3 weeks, and need a course plan and syllabus built by then.... :shock:
