Google has finally released its IM client - GoogleTalk. It uses an open standard (unlike MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL who all want to tie you in)

You can download the client here
http://www.google.com/talk/ (Its windows only atm)

For Linux/mac tips see here :
http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html
http://www.smashsworld.com/2005/08/im-on-google-talk-right-now.php

Here is an appropriate quote from Slashdot.org
Quote:
Google is competing head on with the services that yahoo, aol, and msn provide. Only they are doing it using open standards, and allowing 3rd party clients. From my perspective, this is equivilent of Google putting the rest on notice:

"Look, we aren't going to let you rape your users anymore. We are going to do what you do... Properly."

BTW you need a Gmail account to use GoogleTalk for now as its still in Beta (like most other Google services ;) )
If you need a Gmail account send me a PM.

I'm taking a look. signed on as Golga.Bolg@gmail.com

Aubai, whats your gmail?

Hmmm I wish you could open multiple instances. I think trillian used to allow me to sign into multiple accounts from the same service.

It's blocked by the firewall at the company I'm subcontracting to. :(

I got an invite, But I'm not sure from who.

First impressions are that its a very basic IM app. No real advanced features to be found here.

I suppose the real change is that it's going to be promoted as an open standard. (However Trillian kind of superceded this, if in an unauthorized fashion)

How many IM apps do you really want running at one time though? I have given up on all of them except yahoo (only because they were the first to add some features I liked)...

I'd like 2, one personal, one business.

oh I don' t mean how many 'sessions' or how many user names/screennames...

I mean how many different programs?

I mean is there really any reason to USE google? They aren't really doing anything except offering one more Messenger program

Except as I understand each of the others is proprietary, and google is attempting to establish an open standard.

To you and I it means very little immediately. Over time though it may mean that either the others become open, or they resist and stay a silo.

I know what you mean, blue. I loved Trillian...as half my coworkers are on MSN, and the other half on AIM... with family on Yahoo and old friends on ICQ.

Now, it'll be interesting to see how many go to Google, and how Google thinks they'll offer something new to the market.

Of course, I can imagine them easily adding in some context-sensitive info... like ads based on what you type, auto-storage and indexing with their desktop search tool, archiving of your messages online if you wish, auto-displaying maps when you type an address, etc, etc.

I always like when a new hungry competitor steps into a ring of 'old die-hards'.... the competition stirred up is a beautiful thing to watch. Especially when it's free to us. :)

Its a pretty basic IM client, but it supports the open Jabber standard XMPP(?) so other clients can be used. I think it will be very interesting to see what happens with the open standard now that Google puts its weight behind it.

only problem I have with open standard IM clients... it would be VERY easy to ... 'redirect' certain content... say webcams...

I suppose it's only a question of time until Trillian supports the Google format as well.

So I'll stay with Trillian. One app to rule them all.
