| Post subject: | Anyone been to Jamaica? |
My WIFE and I are going to Jamaica next week for our honeymoon. We are going to the Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Sept. 12-18. Has anyone ever been to Jamaica? Anyone been to any Sandals resorts? Comments? Suggestions? We don't know what to expect, but are looking to have a great time. We're really nervous about the weather. Right now there are no tropical storms headed that way, but the "oh-so-unpredictable" 10 day forecast is calling for rain all next week. |

Nope. I've been to St. Thomas with my wife, but not Jamaica...would love to here how it was when you get back! |

My parents have cruised the Caribbean several times as well as vacationed at many of the Caribbean hotspots. Now that they have retired, vacationing is all they seem to do. Their only experience with Jamaica was the few cruises that stopped there for the day or night. They said the remote places and scenic views are beautiful. The cities are less beautiful due to the poverty, panhandlers, beggars, and drugs. My parents did not like seeing the children exploited by organized groups of beggars. However the exploiters and opportunist focus on the cruse ship passengers, so I am sure my parents saw an unusual amount of unpleasantness in one huge dose. Inside of the resort, and away from major tourists bottlenecks you should be fine. I have heard rave reviews about Sandals resorts, including the one in Jamaica. Many of Danyale’s girlfriends have been there and loved it. I think you will have a great time there. If I was to visit Jamaica it would be at the Sandals resort because it is secluded, protected, and by all accounts lovely. When I went to Cancun I was told: Be careful when venturing outside the resort. Don’t be taken advantage of by the locals that prey on the tourists. Outside of the resort: don’t accept any drink that was already opened or was made out of your sight. Watch you wife’s purse. When you leave your room for the day, lock all money, jewelry, miscellaneous valuables that you leave behind in the room’s safe (if it has one). Cancun and Jamaica are different places, but I imagine the advice is sound no matter where you visit. Including the US. /edit I will see if my parents recommend any specific POI |

Ahhh, enjoy it! I've never been to a Sandals resort but was in Jamaica for a little more than a week about 6 years ago. The country was beautiful! Some good friends of ours (he's just getting into WoW, BTW) are originally from Jamaica and they guided us around the island so we saw a little more 'ground view' perspective on Jamaica. The all-inclusives (I'm pretty sure that's what Sandals is) are very nice though in that you worry about nothing. There is likely a charge for extras such as jetskis or parasailing (which I recommend even though I was rewarded with a demon-wedgie the last time I did it) but meals and drinks are typically included (except for tips). As for weather... Hope for sun but make the best of whatever comes along. Who knows, maybe you'll just the rest of us in the parent ranks sooner than you think.

Just last weekend, My wife, My daughter, and myself were in bed, watching ESB. So, 4 is almost to old, to begin the training in my house. |

I work with a Jamaican and he tells me about the place all the time. He says it has some beautiful scenery, but the government and the people are all a bunch of thiefs. That and they have the best coffee in the world, "Jamaican Blue." Like Cyrus said I would stick with the resorts, but not venture elsewhere. If you want me to I'd be happy to ask my Jamaican co-worker for some travel tips. |
