Post subject: | Deadly plague in WoW? |
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4272418.stm Quote: The infection was only supposed to affect those in the immediate vicinity of Hakkar's corpse but some players found a way to transfer it to other areas of the game by infecting an in-game virtual pet with it.
This pet was then unleashed in the orc capital city of Ogrimmar and proved hugely effective as the Corrupted Blood plague spread from player to player. Although computer controlled characters did not contract the plague, they are said to have acted as "carriers" and infected player-controlled characters they encountered. Is this for real? Anyone been hit [Mods feel free to move this but thought the seriousness which this article is written was simply to funny to be shunned to the corners of a less visited forum] |

It is similar to the "Soulbomb" problem from a few months ago. Its a DoT that spreads, so if someone gets it, then heads back to civilization quickly, they can spread it. Its just a thing, nothing huge in all honesty... So you die once while browsing the AH... oh well. |

I think the RP potential and coolness factor of it is actually pretty high. Clever idea. |

and should bring the griefers out too. Still would be funny to witness. I'd be there spouting, "Purifies 10s per customer! Get in Line or go for a corpse run." |

Actually, I don't think anything can heal it from what I have heard from some folks who have had it.. |

Its a DoT that spreads, so if someone gets it, then heads back to civilization quickly, they can spread it. Point here is, you can take your time if you are a pet class. Just unsummon your current pet while infected, walk to the next city, summon your pet that is still infected and voila... instant plague. Same as the Soulbomb. You'd think the devs would catch these issues by now. Edward |

The devs are probably too busy laughing to fix it. Managers, on the other hand, are probably getting pointy hair. |

Talk about biological war-fare in a virual universe. Powerful weapon it is yes, if you hold a grudge against a former Guild it could be a good way of revenge. If it could be made so people would get xp for using this kind of warfare think about the PvP in a whole new scale. (Haven't read the article yet) /hides away from incomming tomatoes |

Think about the role a healer could get in a MMORPG. Now be working as an actual doctor if the healing was possible. Can see the unleashment of the Krytos virus in SW:G Anyone got a screenie of the streets in the game? |

That sounds very interesting. I ask againg for screenies from the game, and after listening to it, I liked the Idea of something similar could be set in as a world event in the game. Making people unite for one goal once and a while. |

A great "When I was a famous developer..." story from Richard Bartle (one of the first MMO developers): Quote: In MUD2, players stand a chance of catching a cold if they sleep outside in the open and it starts to rain. When they have a cold, there's no cure (no magic is that powerful) and they'll occasionally sneeze and cough, reducing their stamina (hit points). If you sneeze or cough in the presence of another humanoid, they could catch your cold too (unless they only recently had it, in which case they're immune).
Most colds were spread between players, but occasionally a humanoid mobile would get hurt in a fight, sleep (to recover stamina) in the open, and catch a cold. This mobile would then cough on players and perhaps infect them. Naturally, players took (well, take, as they still do this) this cold and use it as a weapon. The usual tactic is to catch a cold, visit a realm inhabited by some 52 (NPC) dwarfs, and infect one of those with it. They'll pass it to other dwarfs, until eventually most of the dwarf population has a cold. Dwarfs have high strength and dexterity, so they're tough in fights, but their stamina isn't so high; losing 3 stamina to a cough is therefore more worrisome for a dwarf than for a player character. Players will let the infection spread, then weigh in and attack the dwarfs that have reduced stamina or, better still, that are sleeping (no defence against an attack!) to recover the stamina they just coughed away. Maybe these are some good ideas to incorporate into Arindel's game design ideas? |

Ideas like that can always be incorporated into a fairly generic, well-planned design. But, let's put that on the Ambitious list. Still, it looks like loads of fun to use. But, you would neeed some type of model and reaction to outbreaks... |
