OK at the risk of loosing everyone's respect, I have something to ask.

So what is Civilization like?

I guess I was off working when the first one came out, and for one reason or another I never picked up the later versions. I remember looking at the Civ3 box, thinking that the mix of old and new technology on the cover seemed odd, and I was not so sure about the squared, tiled look of the map. But I loved RTS and figured it would be a good game. However D and I were playing something else at the time so I never bought it.

I checked out the Civ4 site, and I think it is something D and I would like. But I would like to know the ins and outs so that I can be better absorbed by the hype.

Sid Meier is a freakin genious!! That just about says all there is needed to know about what Civ 4 is gonna be like.

Its not a RTS, just a plain ol strategy game. I have never played multiplayer so I can't speak to that aspect, but the solo game is tons of fun.

Decisions are what this turn-based game is all about.

e.g. First few turns - should I create a bunch of settlers for rapid expansion and snatch up key resource locations, or should I be happy with just a few monster cities?
mid-game - should I keep the peace and continue developing new buildings and wonders or finally get off my duff and kick the pesky Indian (yea Ghandi isn't all that innocent afterall) asses.
end game - now that those Indians are dealt with (and the Germans so nicely disposed of the English) should I continue with my mobilization and swarm Berlin or return the peace and get that spaceship off the ground.

I have always been a huge fan of Civ games, mostly for the fact that I love starting from nothing. Never been big into end game stuff (that is even apparent in WoW but that's more b/c I have developed a hatred for PUG formation). I love starting new Civ games for the thrill of exploring and claiming key resources for my own and have other civs coming begging at the door to trade. Feel the power!! :D (I also refer you to my new sig...)

PS - never, ever, ever trust the Indians

Today is the 24th. I have a break in the middle of the day, may have to see if this game is in the stores.

After we're all done running around like children in Santa's workshop and have a handle on the game, we should do some MP action.

Thoughts on setting up a game? Set aside a static time to play?
Sly and I play multiplayer games all the time (Civ, SMAC, MOO) and you just can't compare the AI to a real person when diplomacy comes in.

Agreed. I would be interested. Don't have much experience as I've tended to play these types of games solo, but sounds like it would be a lot of fun

That sounds fun. I too have only played these solo. You can save MP games right? If so, then we should easily be able to play a few turns one week, save, then pick it up again the next week if the games turn into epic monstrosities.

Author:  Tetran [ Mon Oct 24, 2005 5:16 pm ]
Post subject:

Yes, you can save the games. The Host and the Clients can all usually save the game. Golden rule of backups is don't keep them all in the same place :P

I was thinking maybe set a couple hours aside on a weekend or whenever it works best for people and go from there. You might decide to have more hours extended (you'll need to call the UN Council for that lol). Civ is a game I can sit for 10+hours playing and I swear I'm going to have arthritis of the ass or something.

You can also set the MP game to run Simultaneous Turns, which is pretty much self explainatory and a great game dynamic (saves a butt load of time too). It's fun to watch someone sneak attack a unit or otherwise flat out declare war on someone and see all the Diplomacy channels tied up by people trying to broker deals with other nations to fight with them.

Hey c'mon now. I can get a little self control when I want/need to. But if it means crushing your Civ, then I can game all night baby!!! :P

Just looked at futureshop (related to bestbuy in Canada). They are listing a Oct 26th release date. Oh oh...

No stores here in BR have it yet.

Today is just odd like that. A new book by RA Salvator was released today yet no book store had it yet.

I guess that is another good reason to start buying more stuff online.

yeah ebgames won't have it on shelves till tomorrow around 10-11. i pre-ordered, but may cancel and buy it off the shelf.

Tomorrow looks to be the earliest anyone gets it. I've been following the civfanatics.com and apolyton.com forums (I do this every Civ/MOO/Sid release) and see people reporting in around the country. There's always a knucklehead that chimes in with "I got it!" with nothing to back up the claim. I checked EB, Gamestop, BestBuy, CompUSA, and even Wallyworld (Walmart) and they all say tomorrow. The same thing happened with Civ 3. Day late. Guess I'll play WoW tonight lol.

Has anyone gotten it yet? I am going to start buying everything online now. I thought moving to Denver would allow me to actually get stuff on release day, but so far, no go.

I just called the Gamestop nearest my office and had them set aside 2 copies for me. I shall have Civ4 in hand in less than an hour. How in the heck am I supposed to work the rest of the day with them sitting on my desk?

The original plan was to have it yesterday, since that was the supposed release date. All of my co-workers were in FL for a conference. I was going to get it at lunch and install it at the office. But nooooo... everyone's back now and they don't share my obses...interest in Civ :/

installing now...but so pissed at EBgames...tyson's guy said he'd have it by noon so i went in and he was rude and surely and told me to come back at 5 since he wouldn't have time to go through the boxes...i rolled my eyes and left.

ebgames near my house had them, but collectors editions were only for pre-orders so i'm "stuck" with the regular version :(

I got it today, as well as that RA Salvatore book I had been waiting for.

My EB had extra copies of Civ4 beyond those who pre ordered, I even got to choose collectors or regular. I chose regular because I did not know what came extra, and because Danyale doesn't want me spending money now that I broke my phone.
