Hi guys. Sorry I haven't been around in a while. My life has been a little... hectic for some time now. Nothing really bad, just busy.

Did I miss anything?

So what games are Avians playing these days? I've been playing a little CoV/CoH when I have time, but I've been thinking about picking up something else, too. I tried checking out the SWG changes, but quickly got disgusted and left that game far behind.

I'm going to try and come by here a little more regularly again. Maybe even try and be a little more talkative than I've been in the last few months. I promise!

EVE is calling your name my friend. I see smuggling in your future.

I have no desire to play WoW. I'm sure it's a decent enough game, but I just don't think it's for me.

EVE.... well.... it sounds like the perfect MMO for me. Of course, that's what I thought when I tried it in beta, and it bored me to tears. Is it any better/different than it used to be?

Welcome back you old smuggler!

The boys in EVE should give you a good idea of the "current" state of the game (Moge, Yak, Obo, ...). there's a thread or two in this forum regarding their exploits...I mean...adventures and lessons learned.

Well about SWG many of us (not all) thinks of it as dead.

Though I still have a little hope for it and hoping within 1½ year it'll be back and better.

But currently many are playing WoW and the interest of EVE online is growing.

Basicly the short version of the gaming nature of Avian now.

(Sorry for my, maybe bad language and spelling, but I'm drunk right now)

I'm downloading EVE right now. And with my ultra-crappy dialup connection that I'm still stuck with, it'll take me 1.5 to 2 days.

And I think I may take advantage of this time to do a little drinking myself. I've got a nice bottle of 15-year old Glenfiddich that's been calling my name. Scotch ftw!

We're working on it. It's currently going through the BoD. We really need to get that sped up!

Found this little tidbit. Not sure how "early" in the game you can do this without being at risk of getting yourself blown up but....

Contraband now illegal to carry!

Question
Contraband now illegal to carry!

Answer

Pilots carrying items that are considered contraband will now be contacted by customs officers and asked to either comply with the terms of the customs officials or suffer the dire consequences.
The message you receive informing you of your contraband trafficking may look something like this:
"Amarr Empire has discovered the contraband which you are transporting. If you decline to hand it over or fail to respond in 90 seconds, you will be punished for your transgressions. Do not be alarmed, while we are waiting for your response, one of our number will target, warp scramble and stasis web you - for your safety of course. The contraband discovered was: <insert contraband type here>"

You will then have to accept their terms or face their unholy wrath and lose your ship.

Certain types of items (or even groups) can be registered as being illegal with certain factions. Furthermore, the illegality of the type can be ranked with 3 levels. There are no special limitations to illegal items, except that carrying them might result in hostile actions from faction controlled NPCs.

Players should be warned when jumping or undocking into a system if they are carrying goods that are deemed illegal in the target system (this dialog can be switched off).

Further info on customs and contraband:

Contraband (Illegal Items)
NPC Customs Officers are scanning players in Empire space. Agents in deep space offer illegal items based on loyalty and agents in Empire ask for illegal items through special offers. Customs police may be found at stargates in empire space. They will scan a random selection of the passersby and if they discover contraband, depending on what the contraband is, they will react in a range of ways. Discovery of any contraband results in a fine and a faction standing penalty - where the amount of each is determined by how much is found, the more items and wider variety of types, the higher the fine. Then, each illegal type has a confiscation security level and attack security level, where if the solar system you are found with it in has equal to or higher than that security level, they will engage you in the relevant action. If just confiscate applies, the Customs officers will confiscate it. If attack applies, they will attack you.

As far as I can tell, there are illegal goods (or illegal in certain areas) and customs officers at stargates, but there is no way to avoid being scanned and found to be carrying illegal goods, at which point bad things would probably happen to you.

I think it is mostly a game of chance if there will be a customs ship at a gate or not.

There is a Fast Talk skill that increases you standing with Concord (npc police), but I don't think it would help you with smuggling.

There's no equipment to prevent you from being scanned?

Author:  dbakke [ Thu Dec 22, 2005 2:04 pm ]
Post subject:

not sure of that, Yak, but there is cloaking technology. I guess it all depends on how much chance is built into the code. The way Obo describes it, it'd be like trying to get gold out of Fort Knox...

You should do addiitonal searches on the EVE forums to see if there's more on the subject.

Agent Offers (AKA Black Market Services)

Agents now offer their loyal agent runners special offers with faction loot, faction ships, demand and supply for illegal items and manufacturing missions where they offer to manufacture various named items for ingredients and perhaps some less than lawful stuff.

I thought this was particularly funny....

Why is it so easy to steal ore ?

Question
Why is it so easy to steal ore ?

Answer
The regular containers were designed to jettison unwanted items into space or to hold loot from blown up ships. They were designed so that any player could take from them because that was essential for them to function as they were intended. Players later invented the "container mining" method after noticing that the containers could hold way more than any cargo hold. This use for the containers was never intended and it has the obvious flaw that any player with a reduced sense of right and wrong can come by and take everything from the container and no one can do anything about it.

This risk should be known to all players and there will be no reimbursement for ore lost this way. Also, ore "theft" is not considered harassment so no punishment will be dealt out to those who choose to "steal". Players who are thinking of taking up a career as ore thiefs should note that they will face a lifetime of unpopularity and unhappiness as a result.

CCP has decided to meet players halfway by implementing secure containers that can be bought on the market and have the advantage of being equipped with a password lock. These containers cost money and do not hold the vast amount of ore that the regular containers do. However, with good organization and frequent ore pickups using Industrial ships, they can be very useful for large scale mining operations.

The bottom line is: If you use regular containers to store your ore you assume all the risk. Having your valuables floating in space in an unsecured container is equivalent to throwing money on the street. Should you lurk nearby and wait for someone to take the money and then attack him, the police would deal with you, not him. The same goes in Eve. If you attack a player who just took "your" ore from a regular container in a system with a security level of 0.5 or higher. You will be destroyed by Concord.

Angus.
Smuggling good either illegal or otherwise can be highly profitable. Lower security sections typically have a much higher demand for goods so they pay higher for them. Getting items, ore, minerals and good into them without blowing up is the trick.

Also, some places where say, slavery is illegal can pay huge sums if you can get slaves or other illegal contraband into those sectors.

Moniker is looking into some of these skills. Electronic Warfare seems to be a good launching point.

Well, my download crapped out on me, so I'm having to do it all over again. This time I'm using a download manager so I don't lose my progress.

Unless something else happens, I should be in-game tomorrow (Saturday). I'll make a character and post my in-game name here right afterwards.
