Ive been eyeing the MiniSeries and Season 1 on DVD for a while now but know nothing about them. I was a fan of the original series back in the day. How are the new ones? iTunes has a free download that is 20minutes 'Look Back' at the past 2 seasons but I turned it off as I hate spoilers.

Ive heard I think Cyrus and a few others comment here and there on them but nothing specific.
Should I start with the Miniseries or Season 1?

I've enjoyed it a lot. Not sure if I saw the mini-series though. Are you referring to the pilot episode?

I'm torn.

I LOVED the original series, problem is I was 12 and not a great judge of quality television. Watching the old series now, I see how cliched and repetitive it was.

The new series is completely different. They use more realistic physics in the fighting for one but overall there is less of it in space. The dog fights are almost non existant and you don't get the feeling of a dog fight in the battle sequences. The storyline is more complicated this time around but I am not a fan of a couple of things.

1. The whole "we can't tell them apart from us" angle

2. The constant infighting among the main characters.

3. The original series saw the value of adding strong female characters like Sheba. Now the female characters are Starbuck and Boomer (gag, bad move IMHO) leaving Apollo with ZERO buddies to interact with.

4. They are all too dumb to figure out Baltar (the guy endlessly carrying on conversations with no one else there) is bad.

These are just a few of the problems as I see it. That said, I watch it even though it tries my patience because all the good shows like Enterprise and Firefly are history.

wait. Starbuck and Boomer are chicks? Wow didn't see that coming. I mean yeah it was the 70's and 'everyone' was doing it but still, wow.

I love the strong chicks thing that has been really revived lately. But in the original series like I said they added strong female characters. It in my opinion was wrong to change the main characters.

I don't buy her punching guys and smoking and she's not that hot unless you really are into the tough chick thing. She's just not my cup of tea.

This is excellent. You should start with the Miniseries first, as it is the beginning.

The campiness is gone, however is you are a fan of good storytelling you will like this series a lot. There are a lot of parellels to the original series, of course, and quite a few inside gags.

The best use of an actor from the original series is Richard Hatch in a "different" kind of role.

Now I finally understand...the mini-series was about 3 1/2- 4 hours (like a pilot) for the show that is now in its 3rd season (1st new episode was last night).

I caught seasons 1 and 2, but never the mini-series...

yeh try to catch that miniseries (pilot) it was how the cylons attacked and stuff. Originally 4 hours on scifi channel probably about 3 hours actual running time.

yeah the mini-series was great. It covers the battle and some really key info into the stories of the characters.

Like a true junkie I am starting the second season now.

OK.........

So the fight between Adama and Kane is over, but the Pegasus is still intact.

Does that means that they gotta rename the show BSG&P?

It's still only season 2. As is the crazy custom in the US, they took a brake in the middle, stopping at episode 10 of the season and starting up again in January with episode 11.

Television in America has changed alot since the upstart networks (Fox, UPN, and WB) started airing new television series in the summer which was formerly a bastion of re-runs. In addition some of the post popular television shows now are reality shows which air for a "half season" of 10-13 episodes. A full season used to be 22 episodes, for some shows it has increased to 25-26. So Survivor has a new season in the fall but also after the new year starts as well. American Idol, not wanting to burn people out I believe only has new episodes once a year but airs once or twice a week. There has always been a gap in new shows over the holiday period from Thanksgiving to after New Year because people don't watch as much television.

BG started with a miniseries (pilot) and when interest was deemed sufficient went ahead with a series quite a bit later. It started last January but when episodes (somewhere in that 10-13 range I don't remember exactly) ended in May after the sweeps, they resumed in the end of July and ran until October sweeps. They quit again and have now restarted.

I don't know what season they will call this but things aren't as simple as they used to be.

People use the "repeat" season (lat spring/summer) to try and gain a following with new shows or push some other shows which got positive reviews, but not enough viewers in the hopes that something will come out of it.

Sometimes, it works well. I'd rather be on the back deck or the beach drinking with friends and family. But, that part of my life is on hold (for now).
