I'm still running my 2.8 with a 9700 Pro 128Mb card, 1GB ram amd 1 or 2 Gb HD space (enough for me now).

This systems seems to still suit my purposes, but I doubt it will last another 2 years. is it worth the effort to make a psuedo gaming laptop (can bring it with me when I go on vacation or just sitting on the can :P) as I don't run FPS games, so my rig doesn't need to be top tier.

What would you guys do? buy some better components (graphics card and more RAM)? Any other decent gadgets foo add-ons?

if I go with a new tower, what would you recommend (trying to keep it below 1800 without monitor). dunno, just fishing for now.

Well I just built a brand new, nearly top-of-the-range PC for just under £700 ($1200 ish) only transfering a HD, monitor, keyboard and mouse from my old PC. So you could do a fair amount with that money. Admittedly I bought the components and built it myself, it's a bit cheaper that way.

Well, to each their own... but when I buy new parts i usually shop at that mid-range point, where the part is still decent and the price drop is starting to taper off (you know...while it's still 'cool' but like 50% it's original price ). I feel that is the most bang for the buck. Of course you never get to have the top-of-the-line, but you always have a decent computer.

I agree, it's always best to go for something that's 3-6 months old (hence the nearly top-of-the-range spec for my PC). When a slightly newer or better CPU comes out, the one that was new a few months ago has its price slashed drastically.

I pretty much agree. The top of line expense isn't usually worth the performance (unless you have the money to burn, which I don't...well I would if I didn't both saving for 2 kids to go to college)

I usually target below the prime by a notch (for CPU and grpahics card). I was thinking a Serial ATA HD might be in order and some good RAM are good costs for performance.

I doubt my system above will last 3 more years, hence I'm better off loading up now. Any thoughts on how to make a system that's fairly quiet. My current CPU is way too loud for my tastes.

They gave Dilbert's boss a similar computer.

Do you have pointy hair too? :P
