Post subject:  Star Wars DVDs

For a long time now I have been a stick in the mud refusing to buy any Star Wars Trilogy DVDs because Lucas insisted in putting in all the crap 'new' footage.

Well his most recent release included the original cuts on a 'special edition' disk. After much pondering I figured it was now or never so I bought all three movies.

Much to my delight these really are the original movies, letterbax and all (thought he would cheap out and 4:3 them). The opening credits even shake a bit so you can tell they were not remastered once telecined - which to me is a good thing.

When I was buying them the clerk at the store told me that they will stop selling them on Jan 1 07 per order of Lucas Arts becuase next year they will be releasing them on HD DVD (not blueray). So if you have yet to buy your copies and want the real versions of the movie then buy now!

Say want you want (and I have) about Lucas but all I wanted was the original movies untouched. I have that now so I am happy. Watching them on DVD with all the grain and optical scan masking boxed around the Tie Fighters was like watching them for the first time.

A couple of years ago Cetera made me a DVD set of the original trilogy from the old laser disk version. They are the absolute prize of my collection because until now they were one of a kind!

I don’t think I will buy these new DVDs. I am not sure if it is because I feel with the prequils Lucas sold out to pollsters and the money machine, or because I feel he has lost what originally made Star Wars special. I really can’t put my finger on it, but for some reason I have no urge to buy his newest Star Wars release.

Thanks for the post… I was curious!

How are those DVDs still holding up for you, Cyrus? I haven't touched mine in quite some time. I suppose I should check on them.

One thing to note about the DVDs on sale, the OT is from the Laserdisc transfer, and is not anamorphic. Its a letterboxed 4:3 NTSC transfer. If you've got an HDTV, its still gonna look like crap. Just a word of warning to any who may consider it.

Don't worry, he'll probably release the "THX" versions (remastered, non-'sepcial edition') in about a year.

From what I've read, there's little to no chance of that happening.
