I get asked a lot, so is shochu available in America or Europe? It's really really popular here. I'm not sure exactly how it's made, but wheat and sweet potato are the most popular varieties, and there's also rice, sugar cane, and other stuff. It's generally clear or maybe slightly yellow-tinted, drunk on the rocks or with water.
Regular Japanese sake is available in a lot of places, I know. It's made from rice, I'm not sure what about the process is different. The one of one of my favorite bars here just went on a Suntory training course through Ireland or maybe Scotland, I forget, looking at whisky making and the like. Vodka, gin, rum and the like are all widely available here. It is hard to get microbrewery stuff like New Belgium or Schafly's, probably due to them being microbreweries. Japanese beer (Kirin, Asahi, Suntory) is all pretty good though.

Yeah, but what about your local grocery store/liquor store? I'm sure there are specialist shops somewhere that import it, but I know I've seen regular sake in the grocery stores in Muncie, Indiana, and I was wondering about shochu. Actually, has anyone heard of shochu prior to this post?

Ya, that stuff is on all the shelves here and I regularly see old people sitting outside on the streets drinking it. It might have something to do with me being in Korea though. Ive never seen it in the states, and Im pretty sure it isnt available as most people that leave here take back on average 3 big bottles of it.

The best thing to do is find where in your area Koreans tend to live. In those areas you will most likely find a liquor store or two that carries what you are looking for.
