Yeah, I had to re-read to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

I can't let myself get interested in this until there's actually something to evaluate. So far, games (and in particular MMOs) based on licenses are...umm...disappointing or uninspired to say the least (anyone remember SWG or LotRO?). Personally, I'd rather the money used to produce the MMO was used to make another season of the show. :P

On the positive side, there is tremendous potential in this and I really hope they know what they're doing. Further, since there is basically just one season of TV shows and a movie to use as lore, they'll have a little easier time fitting the game into that lore - one of the biggest stumbling blocks to big-name licensees.

I posted pretty much the same thing on my Horde guild boards Rocky.

While I am hopeful this turns out cool, and there is tons of potential, until an established developer takes the reigns and pumps some serious effort towards it I am not holding my breath.

Would be awsome to go around in that universe though.

well...I am very excited but not to excited. A dev team has not even been chosen, it is being developed on existing software and they want it out by 2008.

Good points are that the producers are former netscape guys so I hope they have the poeple in mind and not the dollar signs.

time will tell.

True. Hopefully...

Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges wrote:
Because the underlying technology is already in place, "I feel confident that we'll see something the public can play sometime in 2008," he adds.

...his projection doesn't set unrealistic expectations by 1) the fan base and 2) the $uit$. I doubt it would with the fan-base, particularly if they've ever played an MMO. As for the latter group...there's no telling.

Optimistically, his comment could hold water - if the infrastructure of the game exists and the devs can focus on the content, appearance and story-line, they quite possibly could at least have a solid beta by then. Who knows...but it'll bear watching.

As Krynn said, it would be shiny to ramble around that 'verse.

It's funny, over Thanksgiving my cousin told me that I should check out the Firefly DVDs. I rented them off of nextflix, I watched the first 4 episodes and though I really wanted to get into it, they just didn't really hold my interest. I can usually look past mediocre production quality, but the overall story arc just moved too slow. Should I have given it more of a chance?

I also think I wanted the Reavers to be aliens or borg-like or somthing. Crazy semi-zombified humans just didn't do it for me.

Madson,
Firefly does take a few episodes to get into. I think it took a few 4-5 episodes for me to really get into it. Once I did though I have literally watched the complete season maybe 7-10times though.

sounds somewhat familiar, except the engine wasn't developed

The characters and their own little stories and traits made the show for me. "The Man They Call Jane" episode had me hooked for good. Can't recall how far in that one was but damn was it funny.

Very well written show imo.

I think much like Star Wars it really gives a sense of looking in on a living universe with a real backstory.

Also the rebellious nature of the primary characters without the black and white clarity of Star Wars.

Lots of humour, excellent dialogue, good characters, and a sense of space as forbidding and massive.

The Libertarian philosophies that the show is based upon.

It's intelligent, fun, doesn't take itself too seriously, the main character always gets himself into situations that he can't talk himself out of but tries to anyway, Book is a damned interesting character, Jayne's predicability makes him funny, it's not too embarrising to watch (I like intelligient comedy, not silly-man-does-stupid-things comedy).......... I'm sure there's more, really need to watch it again!

The rumor-mill is churning this weekend. People are attempting to connect Raph Koster to the project.

Quote:
Raph Koster has just announced the forming of his new company Areae. He is running it with John Donham, also formerly from SOE.

Ok, now...this may be coincidence as I am just adding up recent news but here it goes...

Dec 8th. Firefly gets licensed by Fox to Multiverse to develop a game based on the series.
-Multiverse provides a platform but does not develop games.
-Muliverse announces they are seeking developers.

Dec 15th. Raph announces the formation of his new development company.
-One of the congratulating posts on his webpage is by Susan Wu who said "Congrats, Raph. I’m looking forward to the Firefly world "
-Susan Wu's website www.reality.org says that she has known Raph since 1994 and is excited to support him in finally realizing his dream. The title of her webpage is Susan Wu-Venture Capital.

So she appears to be one of his financial backers and therefore would be in the know.

Now, if I connect these dots...it looks like maybe...possibly...Raph Koster could be developing the new Firefly MMO!

Take Ralph away from SOE and I think he has promise.

Not going to say more as it may give the appearance that I am excited for a FireFly MMO.

I've been following all the buzz around Areae and the hints at what they are going to be doing and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with Firefly or a traditional MMO. MMO in nature, but more likely multi-genre interconnected user-generated mini-worlds. Definitely not Multiverse.

some of the conversations Jay and I had with Ben Sawyer - who was an editor on 'Theory of Fun' hinted toward some similar things.

We had a lunch with Ben and he mentioned Raphs like for the MMO genre but how he wanted smaller more 'custumizable worlds'. Must in tune with what Obo just said.

I tend to agree. It's just fun to see how fast people start putting names and titles together. They spread faster than some from our last office party.

Everything I've read and heard from Raph leans towards the interconnected small worlds that are player driven.
