Sure, we all back-up the contents of our 'My Documents' folder and all the pictures and movies we've downloaded from our cameras and digital camcorders, but...what happens if your backup is destroyed as well? Whether it's fire damage, water damage or your kid decided to 'fix it' for you, what steps does everyone take to make sure your data is safe? Do you take these kinds of precautions? A buddy of mine recently got hit with a boot sector virus and lost all of their pictures from the family vacation to Walt Disney World. That got us to talking and he's been looking at mozy.com. Anyone out there have experience with personal disaster recovery (not to be confused with backup!)? |

I guess personally there is very little on my computer that I would die without...be slightly inconvenienced but not die...Hell computer disasters are a nice house cleaning tool... 
Seriously though I have an external and 2 flash drives anything I really need is on those, including my music, important docs, class work/papers, pictures I probably dont update my backup that much but...meh |

I lost 25Gb of files once when I had a power cut while trying to repartition my hard drive. No back ups of any sort. Started making backups after that point! |

I don’t backup enough. But when I do, I store the data on the relatively new hard drive in my third PC. It is my oldest PC that I rarely use. I figured the odds of loosing data on both machines are low. However I’m not protected from physical disasters like fires or floods as both PCs are in the same room. Crap, now you have me paranoid!

I never back anything up, and disaster recovery is defined as going and buying another PC. Lost files? oh well. |

anything on any hard drive can be recovered. even through fire/water damage, most of it is still readable. just depends on how much you are willing to spend on it. personally, i use a spare hard drive and just dump everything i want on to it every so often. |

The worst case was a harddrive that had been underwater for three years because the yatch burned and took the computer down with it. Cost the guy about 3000 US$ He got 75% of his family/vacation pictures. But this is unconfirmed... |

My computer needs a reformat and I've been thinking how I want to backup my stuff. Is there a good way to hook up an external hard drive or something? Is that economical and/or convenient? |

USB harddrives are relatively cheap and as long as they're USB 2.0, the speed is not a problem. |

Yeah, external harddrives are pretty cheap nowadays. If you want, get a solid state drive, they don't break down as quickly as conventional harddrives and use less power... although they will be more expensive for less capacity since it's a relatively new technology. Or if you already have a dvd-burner and don't wanna shell out big bucks for an external drive, just burn things to dvds. =P |

Not to sound like a shill for the site, by mozy.com (mentioned above) offers 2GB of space free of charge. I'm going to go with the $4.95 a month and get unlimited storage space. |

i wouldnt buy an actual "external drive". They seem sub-par. Buy a really nice SATA drive, then buy an enclosure for it. It may up the overall price just a bit, but you will have much better performance, and space, depending on what you buy. |
