Post subject:  Ethnicity terms

Ok really odd question here. I am building a database structure for a project and filling in the table for ethnicities.

In the U.S. we use the term 'African American' however, this is an international site and not everyone will be an 'American'. What would be the PC term to use here? Any of you Euro folk have any input?

I was thinking that too or 'African Decent'.
I've emailed my friend who is a librarian at UC San Diego, she should know.

im from europe :D , and i never actually heard alot of the difrence in skincolour, sure there are some racists yelling things like nigger, but also my brother(white skin colour) calls me(also white) "nigger", so appearently it does not only aply to black people(and sometimes black people call other black people nigger here...)

the only political correct term i know is foreigners(or whatever its spelled)
but that does not aply to people that were born here...

i think if you had to make a difrence of skin colour, the most politically correct would be "coloured people", but thats never used here, thats the best i can think of

this goes for holland, germany or france(or other countrys) could possably have other things

hope it helped :)

Xenus,
Just an FYI. I know that you are from Holland and there is no way you would probably know this otherwise, but in the U.S. both the term 'nigger' and 'colored people' are considered highly offensive.

It is very true that in pop-culture a lot of people use the 'n word' so internationally it probably seems to be an accepted word usage - which is unfortunate and a topic of another thread. No worries, as I'm sure you had no way of knowing and obviously didn't mean it offensively, just figured I'd let you know.

As far as I am concerned, your innocence is a beautiful thing. We have far too much intolerance here.

Ahh phoey! I'll just treat everybody bad no matter what! j/k I'll treat people as I wanna be treated myself. Done that all the time, will do that always. I have bad eyesight on my right eye. So If I close my left eye everybody looks equally blurry.

Jason I'll give you that nigger is offensive here in the states but until the NAACP comes up with a new name I'm not buying that for colored people. :P

I was under the impression that black people actually prefered the term black to coloured.

I have a serious question for you all though. I know that nigger is derived from the term negro, but where does the term negro come from and is it considered offensive?

From wikipedia:
Quote:
Negro means black in Spanish and Portuguese, and the Italian nero is similar (Latin: niger = "black").

Obviously race in the US is a massive issue so when we discuss these terms we need to look at the contextual definitions and lexicon usages, not just the literal definitions.

Colored people does have negative connotations. My best guess would be because it close connections with the term nigger. Colored People was often used in public circles when nigger would apear to blash.

Today African American is the correct if not just straight out polite term. My Ex is Ethiopian and she preferred the term 'Blacks' and that does seem to be conversationally accepted.

I have to say that i had a friend at high shool who was of african american descent. His father danish, white, his mother was american, very dark I noted. which is why my friends looked like he had both parents black.

Anyway, he was some kind of a joker, but often he didn't like things like black, colored, african descent and all the other political correct nor the political incorrect.

After a couple of weeks I decided to talk to him about it and no matter what I said he came with responces much like Chris Rock. So I called him human.

(And he joked as being offended. His responce was that he was the descendant of god... though in some way for religious people we all are)
